Oscar Mike Radio

I opened the cover to “Time of Flight” and began to read with great interest. I like helicopters and Spencer Emch’s experience of being in the U.S. Army as an Apache pilot captivated me.

Spencer’s story isn’t a traditional military book sense in many respects. After reading it through the second time, I liked that Spencer took a different approach to tell his story about the relationship with his fellow pilots and the AH-64 Apache.

I feel at its core, “Time of Flight” is about relationships. There is no “Army of One’. We don’t fight alone, and it is those relationships soldiers have with each other that make for mission accomplishment. When Spencer transitions out of the military, making new relationships in a new place helped him immensely.

Take your time when reading, “Time of Flight”, it is more than just a story about flying a helicopter.

Go to Tactical 16 Publishing and order Time of Flight! (https://shop.aer.io/Tactical_16/p/Time_of_Flight_A_Gun_Pilots_Story/9781943226689-8314).

Also, check out Spencer on the Author Page (https://tactical16.com/spencer-emch-author/)! Thank you, Spencer, for talking with me it would be cool to jam sometime!

Tom Kilgannon was on Oscar Mike Radio for Number 273 (https://oscarmikeradio.com/273-thomas-kilgannon-freedom-alliance/) almost a year ago. He came back to update me on programs, services, and scholarships for children of deceased Veterans. As you will hear, a lot can happen in a year, and it is an exciting time at Freedom Alliance.

Freedom Alliance has partnered with War Heroes on Water to provide deep-sea fishing experience for Combat Veterans and is looking at more ways to expand on the relationships that have been developed. Relationships are the foundation for successful advocacy, and Freedom Alliance has a long history of success.

Thank you, Tim, for talking with me and for Freedom Alliance’s continued service to our nation’s heroes. You can go to https://freedomalliance.org/ to learn more and support the work Freedom Alliance is doing.

Tina McCollough joined the Marine Corps in the early 1970s. It was a different time for women in the Marine Corps, but Tina had a great experience in the Marine Corps. Her transition out of the Marine Corps was challenging because the GI Bill was cut off on June 15th, 1977. Tina believes that more should be done to reduce or eliminate the cost of college education, and she talks at length about how change could benefit Veterans.

Ernie’s Mountain Bakery & Café is named after her grandmother Ernestine who instilled a love for food in Tina. Tina has woven what her grandmother taught her about food into a place that brings one back to a different time. Tina made me oatmeal raisin cookies, and as you can see and hear, I enjoyed every crumb! If this is what she can do with a cookie, I can’t wait to get out to Colorado to check out all the goodness!

You can see all the goodness by going to www.erniesmountainbakeryandcafe.com! Tina will ship it to you!

Thank you, Tina, for the amazing cookies and conversation.

This show is about Denisha Montgomery Smith from a larger viewpoint. I have been struggling with questions about why these kinds of situations are tolerated in the military. Especially when a recruiter will tell someone and their family that the military will “take care of them”. Only to experience the worst kind of betrayal when a soldier like Denisha Montgomery Smith dies in a manner that is suspect at best.

Colonel Wesley Martin is U.S. Army Ret. and served our country for over 30 years. He acted several times in his career to punish those who hurt other soldiers in the Army. This continued when he retired from the Army in 2010. He has been involved with Denisha’s case and answered questions I think many people have.

Colonel Martin said this boils down to people who see and know something is wrong and then choose to not do anything about it. As long as people willingly turn the other way when situations like Denisha’s arise, this will continue. It was hard to hear because I want to continue believing that those officers leading us to conduct themselves to a higher standard. Sadly, that is not the case which made talking with Colonel Martin a lesson in where we came from and why history is repeating itself.

He talked about Denisha and her family warmly and when I asked him about apparent failures in the system there was an undercurrent of anger in his responses. It seemed he took the failures of senior leadership in Denisha’s case personally and it drove him to seek justice for her and her family.

I asked Colonel Martin about Senator Grassley’s involvement in this case. He told me of instances where Senator Grassley got involved in previous cases and what happened when he was lied to about misconduct. Someone listened to many voices asking for help, and now a louder voice is demanding justice for Denisha.

As Colonel Martin said, we as Americans need to write our Elected Representatives and Senators about this and let them know we do not accept what happened and want change. I believe this is something that many Americans forget. Senators and Representatives are elected. These people work for us and have a duty to listen to our voices. If we can spend time on social media, watching sporting events, and going to concerts, we can take ten minutes and demand change for those with no voice.

Go to https://www.colonelwesmartin.com/ and https://neveraloneadvocacy.org/ to learn more about the people demanding accountability and change so what happened to Denisha never happens again.

Thank you for being one of those who won’t look away, Colonel. You are someone we can all follow.

I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Hansen in March of 2021 (YouTube Link – https://youtu.be/DBjAYEPeukE).

According to Dr. Hansen, The University of Applied Research & Development is a Veterans Affairs-funded institute of higher learning, allowing active service personnel, veterans, and their families to gain bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

This conversation focused on the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs for Emergency Response and Risk Management with a focus on Veterans. This program is opening in New Zealand after the pause from COVID-19.

Dr. Hansen believes that Veterans have the skills to provide value in crisis situations. The program is focused on rigorous academics while taking care of the whole person. A Veteran can travel to New Zealand, get a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, and come away with a degree that is needed and has value. It is a unique approach and if you are looking to change your life and help others, this may be the program for you.

If you are a Veteran interested in applying to UAD go to https://uard.university/didyouknow/

Thank you, Dr. Hansen, for talking with me.
