SCRIPTURE:1 Corinthians 10:12-1312 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.THE QUESTION:Can I ask you a question? What is it that trips you up in life?Where are your “hang ups”?Another way of asking this isWhat is the thing you keep doing even though you know you shouldn’t?ILLUSTRATION:You ever hear your kids yelling at the other kids and think, “ooh, that was totally me…” I usually high five them for sounding so cool like their old man :)You see yourself in your kids a lot, don’t you. One of the things a few of my kids have started to do is be sneaky. It gets me, because that’s something I can struggle with, I’m smart enough to be sneaky and try and hide my disfunction. We are pretty intentional about how much we let them get on devices or just watch tv. We guard what goes into their minds. On a pretty regular basis, we will find one of them sneaking onto a device or doing something they shouldn’t do online.Every time we talk about how hurtful of a habit that is…But, the reality is, I see myself in them.I feel like Paul nailed it when he said…Romans 7:17-24 (THE MESSAGE)For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.21-23 It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.24 I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question?ILLUSTRATION:In 1997 the people of Taipai had put together a massive tug of war contest to celebrate the end of the colonial rule of Japan. 1,600 people wrapped their hands around the rope, not knowing the danger that lie ahead. The rope that had been chosen could only stand the force of 26,000kg, but the people would exert and estimated 80,000kg… Almost instantly the rope snapped and came hurling back at the people who were tugging on it. It came back with such force, it severed several peoples arms…It was gruesome…You get what it’s like to have that rope snap, right?To feel what Paul is saying”Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. It happens so regularly that it’s predictable.
