MEMORIZE: Isaiah 61, Luke 4SCRIPTURE STUDY:Isaiah 61:1————————>We all depend on each otherOPENING ILLUSTRATION:When I was a kid, the thing I hated most about being sick was having your parent force medicine down your throat that tasted like soap that had been dragged through vomit.  Man, I hated it, seemed like they always tried to suck you in by telling you it tasted like bubble gum. First of all, whose idea was it to make medicine taste like bubble gum, if your goin to flavor it, why not go with chocolate shake or something. But it always tasted horrible, didnt it?  Then, you finally get old enough to graduate to pills and you thunk your battle is over…  Till your mom shows you the horse pill you have to swallow. I know that some of you take pleasure in giving your kids those big pills, you all are sick :). But for me, I could not figure out how to swallow pills, it would always get stuck on the back of my throat and you’d get that gross bitter taste working it’s way up your tongue. I’d be gagging and my mom would try and give me the hymlic. Horrible…And I have to tell you, somewhere in my Christian experience I found that I started to view the Gospel, the good news that Jesus had died to redeem me from my sinful state, I viewed it as an intellectual pill people had to swallow.-Somewhere along the way I started to think it made people gag rather than satisfying a hunger-I thought it got stuck in their throat rather than wetting their whistle.We are getting ready to start a new sermon series next week called: “On a Rebound” and we are going to talk about how to get your relationship with God back on trackAn as we go through it,My hope is, that you will start to realize that God is not done with you yet…Get your bibles open to Isaiah 61.  Now jump two thousand years back in time with me, Jesus is in his home town, it’s the sabbath (Saturday) and Jesus is in the synagogue (Jewish church). He grabs this ancient scroll and unrolls it to the passage we are about to read, and he reads this:Isaiah 61:11 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,for the Lord has anointed meto bring good news to the poor.He has sent me to comfort the brokenheartedand to proclaim that captives will be releasedand prisoners will be freed.Get this, Jesus is in his hometown at his home church, he reads this and sits down and says, today, this passage has been fulfilled in your hearing…BAM!  Have you ever stood in line to get a book signed or to meet someone famous, maybe to watch the latest star wars movie (come on be honest…). The anticipation builds, you get excited, and there’s that moment when the opening credits start playing, or your next in line and you get all giddy like a school girl?  You have to know that what-Jesus has just told these people is a little like saying, your wait is over.-You see God has been silent in Israel for hundreds of years. No prophecy, no miracles, just people faithfully trying to follow week after week.They knew this passage, they knew it was a passage that referred to God redeeming Israel through a messiah.I don’t know how to tell you what it must have been like, but I imagine it was silent afterwards. —>We all depend on each otherOPENING ILLUSTRATION:[set it up in front of the cross…][have objects on stage (some are prepped to be extra heaving) christmas presents – calendar, cleaning supplies,          a turkey, stack of work papers, etc.)ready for Christmas?!  pitter patter of little feetPresents to be opened, cider and hot chocolate drank!  hardly wait!    I’m the gift whisperer – I love Christmas time – well, at least, I love all the fun stuff…Some of you ready to get it over with-looking down road to January never let  December be as busy?I mean, some of you feel like this board up here andYour bucket is getting pretty full..  been buying presents wrapping them getting everything together-gear up for the cleaning express!  train already left the station-calendar has been full for this December – barely had one free night -not to mention closing last years numbers, polishing off budgets,-getting projects in, asking off for work, traveling, etc..  -lets face it, some of you feel like jumping ship!  Ha, nothing like a good uplifting Christmas sermon, eh?  Anyone feel like you are at the breaking point?  Stress seems to abound at the holidays.  ILLUSTRATION:We are at Silver Dollar City Friday, I’m sitting outside this shop while half my kids are on a coaster and the other half are in a shop drooling.  I hear this husband and wife arguing behind me and I turn just in time to here her say, “You’re and idiot…”  Oh man, he was pointing his finger, ready to say something and just stood there for like 10 seconds trying to figure out his next move…We’ve all been there, right, the stress goes up and our fuse gets shorter…When your stress level goes up, the people who pay for it are those who are closest and dearest to you.  Did you get that?  When stress goes up, people who pay for it are those closest and dearest to you.  Today, I want to help you learn how to manage the stress that comes with the Christmas seasonso you can actually enjoy this Christmas and not let the burdens and weight of expectations destroy an opportunity to enjoy the reason we even celebrate at this season!2 Corinthians 4:16-1816 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.ILLUSTRATION:I remember the time when this passage really hit me hard.  I had taken a bunch of High school students on a trip down to New Orleans to work on helping to rebuild down there after Katrina had hit.  We had been working all week long and all of the kids were starting to feel a little depressed about the whole situation.  You see, we were down there nearly two years after Katrina had hit and it still felt like a war zone – people houses had been destroyed, we had cleaned up places and were throwing away peoples memories.  And the hardest part was that most of the people who were hit the hardest were the poorest.&n

—>We all depend on each otherOPENING ILLUSTRATION:[PLAY:  “Christmas Vacation” clip]“Clark, that’s the gift that keeps on giving, the whole year”I was trying to figure out at what age does Christmas start having that “Not so magical” quality to it. For me, it was the year that gifts went from remote control cars to my uncle giving us spare change – all the adults thought it was neat because he would give us wheat pennies and gold standard dollars and I thought, “he just gave me $1.15, where’s the Remote Control car???”I think for most people, Christmas time has a nostalgia to it of some great days gone by.  If you still have young kids, you try and help that nostalgia keep from going too quickly.But for lots of people Christmas time can be a time that brings on the blues.Heck, Elvis Presley even sang a song about it. There are aLot of things contribute to the blues at Christmas-financial pressures-losses experienced over the years-Dark and cold weatherWhatever the cause, the reality is,For most of us there is a mixture of joy and sadness that comes with the HolidaysBSo, how do you deal with the blues when they come knocking?SCRIPTURE:One of the things that’s interesting to me is howthe Christmas story is full of people who were likely full of disappointment and loss…Elizabeth and Zechariah – relatives of Jesus and the parents of John the BaptistLuke 1:6-7Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.It wasn’t till an angel appeared to Zechariah in the temple and told him his prayer from years before had been heard that the pain of not being able to have a child was healed for them.-Tell me these two don’t know what’s like to be at a celebration and watch as everyone else family gets bigger each year-tell me they don’t know the pain of a longing that never gets fulfilled-I think these two would understand the blues you might have a Christmas-Elizabeth called it her “disgrace” in vs 25Or what about Simeon waiting at the temple – this man who God had promised he’d see the Messiah, we don’t know how long he waited to see that promise fulfilled, but he tells God He can dismiss him in peace – like saying, “now I can die”Simeon knows what it’s like to wait for a promise that seems like it’s never going to come…Or how about Anna, she was 84 years oldand she holds the baby Jesus in her arms and gives thanks to God – she a woman whose husband had died in in their youth…I’m telling you Christmas seems to be surrounded by people who knew what it was like to live in disappointment and loss.Something that struck me about every one of their stories is that in all of them,They were not abandonedBGod remembered themAnd God will remember you. BGod is a God of rememberingThe word remember is used 231 time in the NIV-God remembered Noah after the flood-God remember Abraham and so he rescued Lot-God remembered Rachel and she was able to conceive-God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and brought the Israelites out of Egypt-God remembered Hanna and allowed her to conceive Samuel-God remembered Cornelius and his gifts to the poor and brought Him the gift of salvationGod is a God with a long memoryILLUSTRATION:I have

Can I ask you, why do you get into fights?  Think about the last fight you had.  Was it with a coworker about the best way to handle a sales report that had not been turned in?  Was it you and your spouse arguing over how to spend your free time – you want to be able to hang out with the guys all the time and she wants you at home.  Maybe for you it’s over how much to spend on the Christmas gifts.  Maybe your mom just won’t quit talking about how much she wishes you’d get married already and you’ve had enough.  There are a million reasons we fight, but the real question is, 

How do you fight in a way that doesn’t leave you with regrets?

I want to help with that – Biblical principles that get over looked

Matthew 18:15-20

If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[e] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[f] loosed in heaven.

When the fight is brewing inside of you the first question you need to answer is:  “Does the person with the issue know there’s an issue?”

-How many times have you heard a wife bashing her husband to other women – she’s never really sat down with him to work out the problem

-How many men are passive aggressively making fun of their wives instead of addressing their issues

The holidays bring up sensitive issues about how much money you spend, how your time will get handled – fights abound…

Stop talking to everyone else about it and go to the source

2.  Recognize the battle

If I could bestow one gift on every Christian in this room this Christmas it would not be a new apple watch

-it would be for you to stand up and recognize that you are in the middle of a spiritual battle for your soul and every soul around you

Ephesians 6:10-12

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

during the Holiday season, a lot of problems and pain under surface -hit the fan at this time of year

look at things like forgiveness, depression, loneliness & more… 

This week, we are talking about 

How do you forgive when it really hurts

ILLUSTRATION:

In my experience few families get away without serious hurt.  woman who had been so vile to children and grandchildren, only 1 showed up to make arrangements and that relative did it out of guilt.  “she was just mean and played everyone in the family against each other…”

have issues in your family?

-the favorite?

-never told you were loved

-ignored abuse because it would be too difficult to face the facts

-isolation and abandonment

-taken advantage of over and over again

What I know is that

There is no more difficult people to forgive than the people we are supposed to be close to – our family.

because we are supposed to be close

supposed to protect

supposed to support

supposed to love

when violated, we long to hold someone responsible…

You’re not alone

This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

Joseph just didn’t get it…

a few paragraphs – 3 times his brothers hated him…

Jacob sends Joseph out to look for brothers – supposed to bring a report – last time brought back a bad report…

-can’t find them where they are supposed to be…

finally catches up to them, they’ve been watching him for a long time

-hatched a dirty evil plan…

-take Joseph throw him into the bottom of a well…

plan is to kill him and tell their father an animal got him

see some Ishmaelites with camels – spice merchants on way to Egypt -the brothers sold him as a slave to traders…

there on out, Josephs story like a hollywood movie

-sold as slave egyp

What drives you?

-keeps you awake at night? wake up the morning thinking – I have to get that done.

worried about your health?

worried about your job?

furnace acting up and you don’t know where you’ll get the money?

What at a deeper level?  What drives you?

ME:

I have noticed in myself a deep sense of dissatisfaction over how my life is going or has gone.  Now, listen, if you asked me how things were at any point in time, I’d probably tell you great.  What I mean is 

I always have this feeling of “I’m not enough…”  

Like, I’m not a good enough leader, father, husband, etc.

I’m not doing enough

Gotta do more, gotta be more, gotta get more done…

does that resonate with any of you?

There is this deep fear in me that

I’m just not enough…

WE:

Surely I’m not alone in this…

-dieting Americans do ($33 billion/year)

-work-a-holics? (many avg. 50hr/wk)

-religious fanatics

-girls cover beautiful faces with makeup to get love from boys

-hunger for sexual release feel good about self till the guilt settles in

-hours away from home volunteering, giving, trying to prove to you are enough…

SCRIPTURE:

Phil 4:10-13

10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 

 context, middle of offering talk.  Telling how thankful he is for their support – how they have financially come around the mission of God.

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 

ILLUSTRATION:

Calmer water is on top, the deeper it is…  the more turbulent, the more shallow…

12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

In Phoenix sitting with a billionaire…  Here’s what struck me.  You wouldn’t have known it by just sitting with him.  He spoke mostly of Jesus…

Here is Paul, saying, “I know what it is to live in mansions and I know what it’s like to be hungry like a dog on the street.”

But in all of it, I’ve learned a secret to be content.

Doesn’t that sound so good?

To learn a secret that gives you the means to get through it all?

-learn secret allows you to let down wall of having it all together?

one of the most misquoted verses in the world comes in…

What is the secret to contentment in any and all circumstances?

If I can just have one more…

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:Turn to your neighbor and answer this question:What’s the greatest adventure you’ve ever been on?and it can’t be being married – you guys are just kissing up…I spent some time thinking about this for me… I’ve been on a lot of adventures – it’s something I live for. My heart gets stirred by adventure…For me, it’s anything from climbing up a mountain, to mudding in a jeep, to going on a missions trip to work with people in the inner city. If I’m honest with you – adventure is something I just really live for…Can I ask you a question?Does the life you are living stir your heart?Is there any intrigue to it?Anything dangerous?Anything that causes you to live on the edge?Here’s what I have learned over the years of following JesusThe life Jesus offers is not a life of settling for easy…Jesus’ offer is for an adventure…listen to this quote from John EldredgeJohn Eldredge Quote:“Probably the major hinderance to any of us really walking with God and therefore finding the life that God wants us to find, is that thing in us that just wants to find a nice little life.  We just don’t want to be harassed by greater things, we just don’t want to have to deal with it.  There is something in us that just wants life to be simple and easy and nice.  But my dear friends, you don’t get that life.  And the sooner we come to accept that, the sooner we can move on in our own holiness, in our walk with God, and yes, to find the life that he does have for us.”Jesus said it this wayMatthew 10:39 (NLT)If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.You simply cannot hold onto your old ideas of life and keep a firm grasp on the life Jesus offers.-you have to choose…I love Eldredge’s line –“But my dear friends, you don’t get that life.  And the sooner we come to accept that, the sooner we can move on in our own holiness, in our walk with God, and yes, to find the life that he does have for us.”I don’t believe you will ever find true contentment until you start to live the life Christ has for you.So, how do you find your true life?there are so many passages we could go to, but I want to take you to Luke.  This is a sermon Jesus preached – there is another version of this in Matthew, and I believe that’s another version of the same sermon…  As I read this, I want you to get that Jesus is talking to His disciples – these are His followers…Luke 6:20-2620 Looking at his disciples, he said:“Blessed are you who are poor,for yours is the kingdom of God.21 Blessedare you who hunger now,   for you will be satisfied.Blessed are you who weep now,   for you will laugh.22 Blessed are you when people hate you,   when they exclude you and insult you   and reject your name as evil,       because of the Son of Man.23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.24 “But woe to you who are rich,   for you have already received your comfort.25 Woe to you who are well fed now,   for you will go hungry.Woe to you who laugh now,   for you will mourn and weep.26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,   for that is how their ancest

How do you find satisfaction in this life? Our culture would say it’s through stuff, status, and your station in life. But God has something even better in-store. Press play and take the journey of learning how to live your best life.

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: 

I’ve been doing some traveling lately, traveling means digging out luggage and things you haven’t used till the last time you traveled.  There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to find something you want.  I’m looking for my bathroom bag and can’t find it.  I literally got to the point where i’m tearing bags apart and throwing stuff over my shoulders – digging through to find it…

Oh man, NOTHING as frustrating as trying to find something and not

I feel like that’s how most of us are in our lives – we want contentment

-peace and deep satisfaction, yet, nothing we ever do feels satisfying

-aren’t satisfied with our career is at

-should be doing more as a parent

-moms incredible guilt about not being good enough

-feel deep sense that everything is not ok

Is this really your best life?

What can we learn TODAY that would help us start feeling a greater level of contentment in our own life?

before jump into scriptures, redirect where looking for contentment.

Because if you don’t change where you’re looking, you’ll keep missing out on true contentment…

Lasting contentment can’t be found in stuff, status or your station in life.

Did you get that?

-new pair of shoes

-new rod set up

-different vehicle

-getting rich

-becoming the boss, etc.

-closing more sales this month than last

not going to change the level of contentment you feel…

-but this is where we all spend our time looking  

taught since kids that stuff, status and station in life will bring contentment – like we’ve arrived –

never be enough.

be willing to look somewhere else for your contentment…

Prov. 17:1

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet 

   than a house full of feasting, with strife. 

wisdom flies in face of EVERYTHING world is shoving down throat

ILLUSTRATION:

Every commercial if you want to be happy, you need to be skinnier, cooler, have more friends, drive a cool car all while the wind is blowing through your hair and with tons of people all around you laughing and having a good time while bouncing a beach ball around…

But Solomon – the guy who had that life

-He was a king

-had any woman he wanted

-had any thing he could want

he says

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet 

-better off with a dry piece of stale old bread

-and a life that is full of peace and quiet

than a house full of feasting, with strife. 

-than to have a house that is full of a party

-actually, the idea here is people who have given a sacrifice to God and are eating the meat – it’s a giant BBQ

-but at the party there is this huge brawl that breaks out…

The question is this:

Is Solomon right?

Because what he is saying fly’s in the face of our cultures wisdom

ILLUSTRATION:

I have actually been at a big party that was full of fighting…

Thanksgiving a few years ago and we were at some families house.  One of our family members got drunk and was becoming violent.  To the point where your pastor, jumped onto of the individual and threw them to the floor and held them down until they calmed down…

We ended up having Thanksgiving that year, but I can tell you from personal experience, I would have rather had a crusty piece of bread and peace and quiet, than the chaos of that night…

What Solomon is saying is:

Stuff, status, and station in life can’t
