About James
James Rushin is a composer, pianist, bassist, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, and music director in New York City. James started in musical theater when he Music Directed Cabaret at age 13 and has since MD’d over 40 musicals, including, most recently: We Will Not Be Silent (NYMF commission), Arbender Robinson and Anastacia McCleskey (54 Below), Island Song (NYC Premiere performance), Blank: the Musical (Broadway Comedy Club). Some of his all time favorite credits include: First Date (Pittsburgh CLO), Walken On Sunshine (Off Broadway, Music Director, Composer, Pianist), Anyone Can Whistle (CMU), Off With Her Maidenhead (MD, Composer, CMU), Baby Wants Candy (National and International Tours), Limboland, and La Donna Improvissata.
His work as a musician has taken him around the world as well, finding his groove as composer, lyricist, orchestrator, and/or Music Director in hip hop (Billy Pilgrim), Soul (Lyndsey Smith and Soul Distribution), Jazz (Ronnie Burrage, Tim Price), Country (Maddie Georgi), Rock (Ribbons), Reggae (Rasta Rafiki), Folk/Indie (Starbird and the Phoenix), Pop (Dylan White), Irish (violin duo Sephira), and Funk music (Jimbo and the Soupbones). He has been an integral part
of acts opening for Bon Jovi, The Deftones, Tower of Power, and Nicki Minaj, This Will Destroy You, and featured on shows like CMT’s Music City Madness.
As teacher/coach, he has taught workshops and classes at over 15 different improv theaters, including his hometown of Pittsburgh’s Arcade Comedy Theater. He has also been a member of the core creative team and faculty at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Academy and held teaching jobs at Point Park University, West Virginia University, and Valley Forge Christian College. He presently coaches musical theater students at New York Vocal Coaching with
Arbender Robinson (star of Broadway’s Book of Mormon, Beautiful, The Lion King).
His improv coaching focuses on identifying your strengths and building your awareness of cause/effect to create rich storytelling and strong, memorable characters, every time you step on stage. His vocal coaching focuses on ear training and facility with the instrument so that we are always in control of our melodies the way we are in control of our speech.
