  • OUR 106: Josh Fonokalafi and Rivals.com_Michelle Bodkin

    http://earwholemedia.com/wp-content/audio/ol-ute-radio/OUR_Ep106.mp3
Ep. 106 is joined by comedian Joshua Fonokalafi. He tells us how he got the great nickname of Joshua Phone Booth Full of Coffee. He is headlining Wiseguys Comedy Club in Ogden this Saturday. Show is at 8pm, go tell him you heard him on the show and he will probably giggle like a school girl.

Here is the Movie grudge match update. In an effort to make it tougher I dug deep in the movie cave to find some fresh titles for the game. The theme is comedians in movies. Jason Harvey is the current champion so listen to see if Ol’ buddy ‘Phone Booth,’ can make a run at it.

Also listen to my report of my recent attempt at bowling on the University campus.
We’re coming off our biggest win of the season for the University of Utah football team over the mighty UCS Trojans. Michelle Bodkin gives us the eye witness view of what she saw from the field. See who she thinks the MVP of the game was. There’s no time to rest for the Utes as they take on Arizona State this weekend.

Will it be another grinder? Do we fear the dreaded letdown game, or is it a coming out party? We love a Cinderella sports team, why not the Utes? It could be them!

  • OUR 105: Jason Harvey and Rivals.com_Michelle Bodkin

    http://earwholemedia.com/wp-content/audio/ol-ute-radio/OUR_Ep105.mp3
The show gets off to a high speed start as Jason Harvey stops by to tell us about shows he’s putting on in Salt Lake. Jason talks to us about how he tries to put on something other than a traditional comedy show and how he and Natasha Mower came to be such a good team. He drops a teaser about their future show soon to be declassified. Jason is doing the work out there in the comedy world. He can be seen on Oct. 24th at the Gallivan Center and Oct. 25th at The Fifth in Bountiful. Show’s are at 7:30 so go out and see what it’s all about and shake that tiny man’s hand. Jason also accepted the movie game challenge. This game is still in it’s inception phase but it’s gaining steam in a big way. You’ll have to listen to see if Jason can take down the current leader in all mighty Bemo. If you have Movie Game Grudge Match category suggestions take it to the tweets and let me know. Follow Jason on twitter @jason_harvey

It’s football time. It’s October, there’s a bite in the air, leaves are on the ground, and as usual I’m annoyed by stuff. Michelle Bodkin helps to explain my unreasonable confusion over college teams’ multiple uniforms. The Utes take on the formidable USC Trojans this weekend and if they win I think we declare a snow day on Monday. Maybe it’s going to be a tough game or maybe I just don’t want to wake up early that day, but the straight details are thrown out to our loyal Ute listeners. Michelle gives us her predictions and accurately describes her new choice in shoes. Tweet her your thoughts and support my uniform switching idea @mbodkinrivals

  • OUR 104: Jeopardy Champion & Comic, Dr. Bemo

The weird part about being 34 years old is I feel like I’m neither old nor young. I’m not quite sure how to describe it. I’m not young in the sense where life is ahead of me and down the road on a horizon somewhere. I’m not old in the sense where I’ve lived anything resembling a complete life. It’s an odd feeling. I’m kind of in the thick of it right now, or should be at least. It is a funny thing though that anyone in their twenties seems very young to me. I mean when I was a kid being twenty-anything meant adult situations, real life, and people living to their fullest. Basically I got all my assumptions from watching Melrose Place. But now I see someone in their twenties and all I think, “is that how to dress to be cool now?” By the way I’m well aware that in ten years I’ll be saying the same thing about people in their thirties. Just imagine when we’re all in our seventies and eighties and complaining about the younger generation of people in their fifties and their crazy life style. Thirty four’s alright I guess, but seriously Melrose Place was a good show.
My movie game got off to a decent start with comedian and Jeopardy Champion Dr.Bemo. It needs some minor tweaking here and there. Here’s the thing with movies and why they’re so universal. They’re everywhere. Good, bad, short, long, big budget and small. They are so ingrained into your culture that we really just accept them as part of our growing up and life. Case in point is bad movies. How many times does someone mention a bad movie from a long time ago and more than one person will say, “I love that movie”? It happens because good or bad a movie may remind us of a time. So the quality of the movie is secondary. It’s an emotion we get from being in that moment for a brief time. That’s why I think the movie game has potential. Keep listening, I’ll keep on it.

  • OUR 103: Dave Hardward and Rivals.com_Michelle Bodkin
Here’s what I like about the show’s we’ve done. We’ve gone deep: ‘Deep into the interview.’ I’m always interested on what makes a successful person’s motor run. What were the struggles, what their achievements are and what their future goals are? I think in speaking with enough people with this mindset I’ve come to the thought that these people are never happy. By that I mean a motivated person never rests, is never content with the current, and is always looking further down the road. That’s the feeling I get with Dave Harward. He’s a single focused individual who sees the end result not as a finish line but perhaps as a step to another goal. While I see many similarities between myself and him I don’t think anyone ever accused me of over planning. Is that good? Is that bad? I don’t know. I do know I seem to create best on the fly, when my feet are to the fire. Dave is a type A personality. He’s got a goal and he’s laid down the track to get there. Done deal! I’m more of the kind of guy who used the excuse in school “I’m a bad test taker” which is one of the most unusual things to say because no one ever said “I’m great at tests but not good at studying”
No one was really on board with my idea of the Utah Utes ending their season right now after their big win against ranked UCLA. That’s not surprising but what if they did? It would be widely covered by news outlets and not just sports. We won a big game, call it a season. I think other teams would adopt this too. One big win, hit the showers. Everyone knows you go out on a high note. Win and disappear, like Keyser Soza of the college football word. Get back to me on that College ballers.

  • OUR 102: Steve Soelberg and Rivals.com_Michelle Bodkin

My first go around as the Ol’ Ute Radio co-host. It goes without saying that I really didn’t want to screw up. I’d been a guest on the show a handful of times but I still had a decent level of nerves. It’s one thing to rent the car; it’s another to sign the lease. As a comic for the last four years I’m more trusting of my instincts and am constantly looking for a jumping off point. That’s my mindset moving forward on this ride.
Getting to talk to Steve Soelberg is always interesting. He’s a comedian that I’ve considered “the varsity” since I started. I’m glad to be considered one of his peers. When I started comedy Steve was one of the first people to come up to me and say some encouraging words. After a show as everyone was leaving he said to me, “I like your writing”. A small gesture and he might not have even meant it. He could have just been saying it get past me in the hallway. Whatever it was I took it as a bonus. I was glad I talked to Steve a little bit today and hope to go into a deeper conversation in the future.

Here’s the thing about sports. I love them. I’m not one of those fans who blindly cheers at the games. I’m a detail guy. Michelle Bodkin I think is too. Numbers, nuts and bolts, the nitty gritty! That’s the stitching in it all. I think she’s looking for the patterns behind the final score. Needless to say I have more questions for her. The Utah Ute season is still new and best attribute a critic can have is objectivity. I’ll be following along to see how it all shakes down
