Her literacy course called Home As Epicenter is equipping parents and caregivers on how to help their young people decode language. Nikolai encourages parents and caregivers to learn the science of reading so they may extend the work of the schools into community at home.

As Black women and educators rooted in play and nature, they share their personal experiences as well as the historical context to understanding more on the topic of justice in the great outdoors. Ashley also discusses her new book out with Little Feminist Book Club depicting real images of authentic play in nature. Annie Friday is joined by Ashley Jefferson to talk about some of the disparities in who is playing outside despite knowing nature is essential to our mental and physical health. Ashley shares some of the programs she has developed to encourage Black families to get outside and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and nature. Ashley offers some reminders on heading out: simply by being human, we are nature; feeling safe and having fun are critical elements, and there’s no requirement to be a nature expert in order to enjoy the benefits of it.
