The Panthers fired general manager Dave Gettleman today. After four seasons with the team, Gettleman’s dismissal was announced by Jerry Richardson on Monday.

From Panthers.com, Jerry Richardson is quoted as saying, “After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager,”

He added, “I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed.”

As of this recording the Panthers have not provided any further details about Gettleman’s release but fans speculate that Thomas Davis’ tenure with the team – and wishes to retire as a Panther was a point of debate between the former GM and owner. Other issues such as Greg Olsen’s contract and the possibility that Gettleman wanted to move on from Cam Newton sooner rather than later have been suggested.

Gettleman unceremoniously parted ways with long-time Panthers standouts such as Steve Smith, Josh Norman, Jordan Gross and DeAngelo Williams, which did not endear him to the fanbase. Steve Smith has also commented that his retirement as a Carolina Panther was doubtful so long as Gettleman remained with the team.

While many have commented that the Panthers have had one of the most exciting off-seasons it comes as a surprise that the team would make such a move just a week before Training Camp is set to begin.

The big news out of the Panthers this week is that tickets to Fan Fest on August 4th will cost $5 each with a limit of 6 tickets per household. The $5 cost will go to the Carolina Panthers Charities, benefiting charities in North and South Carolina. Still the $5 fee was not well received by some, for an event that in the past has been free. Last year the Panthers gave away free tickets online which overwhelmed the TicketMaster site and the previous year record attendance was recorded at Fan Fest. In recent years the Panthers have moved Fan Fest from a Saturday afternoon practice to Friday nights, featuring videos, performances by the Top Cats cheerleaders, Purrcussion, Panthers practice and a fireworks and laser show.

Again, Fan Fest is Friday August 4th from 6:30PM to 9:30PM. Tickets will be made available next Saturday, July 22nd at 10AM. Get the link for tickets by going to Panthers.com and clicking on Fast Fest Tickets in the Hot Topics section.

7/11/2017: Lots mid-summer Panthers news to cover! Cam was on the new $100,000 Pyramid and we learned our own Ashlyn was once a contestant on Wheel of Fortune! The Panthers social media team got “fresh”. $5 Fan Fest tickets makes fans scream and holler. Welcome baby Cameron Luuuke! Jayme’s great Roaring Riot “One Riot” design got ripped off by some jerk selling crap on Amazon. DeAngelo Williams entered the square circle. CNN covered stupid rules in professional sports. We play fun a little game of “fill in the blank” regarding the 2017 season. Since it’s July and we want to be like every hack so we offer up our predictions for the entire Panther’s season and we justify our reasons behind our predictions! Finally, in light of Thomas Davis’ tricked-out Panthers car Drew asked, “what was your first car and which Panthers player does it remind you of?” Yeah, we went there.

Fourth of July weekend edition!

Darin Gantt broke the news today at Pro Football Talk that Thomas Davis would like a contract extension before training camp begins. The 34 year-old linebacker has spent his entire career with the Panthers. After returning to the game after three ACL surgeries and playing in the Super Bowl with a broken arm, Davis is an icon within the organization. Monday the Panthers released their training camp schedule. In the latest edition of our podcast we included a survivor’s guide for training camp. The Riot Report also published a handy guide to Training Camp.

At Carolina Huddle, Jeremy Igo interviewed Austin Duke.

On Tuesday NFL.com released another ten of their Top 100 rankings with Luke Kuechly coming in at #20.

Late Tuesday night after we wrapped up the podcast (of course) word dropped that Greg Olsen is looking to restructure his contract.

On Wednesday reports emerged that Olsen may hold out from training camp if a new contract is not in place.

Also on Wednesday our friends at Carolina Cat Chronicles released a podcast episode of “Where’s That Cat Now?” featuring an interview with Jason Peter.

On Thursday PantherNation was sent into two tizzies. First, in reaction to a photo Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown posted on social media. In the photo Brown is shown practicing catches while wearing Greg Olsen’s old helmet. Nothing more than that.

Second, former Washington Redskins Offensive Lineman Ross Tucker retweeted @SECBooger, “People I talk to in Carolina tell me Cam’s not a leader and not well liked by a lot of his teammates.”

Cat Scratch Reader has a great summary of the tweet exchange.

But Thomas Davis wasn’t going to let it go at that. Tim Weaver at USA Today Panthers Wire wrote in an article, that Thomas Davis dismisses the Cam Newton rumor as ‘Fake News’ and summed it up it nicely with, in reference to TD, “If anyone knows what’s going on in Carolina’s locker room, it’s the 13-year veteran.”

On Friday, Erik Sommers wrote at Cat Scratch Reader an article titled, “Two Years Ago Yesterday [June 22nd, 2015], Cam Newton Proved Once and for All he IS a Great Leader” where he refers a photo from a tweet from 2015. Sommers writes, in reference to the photo in the Tweet:

Cam Newton visiting one of the victim’s families immediately following the Charleston church shooting. You can find details on that story below, but the gist is that Cam Newton, without alerting anyone at all, took it upon himself to visit and help these families try to heal. He did so completely anonymously until one of the families members’ tweeted out this photo.

It all goes downhill from there as we touch on wrestling as Keith tries and fails at making a joke about a meme. Captain Munnerlyn has a new segment called Captain’s Corner! The Panthers chime in on the new Black Panthers teaser poster.  RIP Adam West. How we went from Adam West/Batman to Transformers to Silverhawks to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors is a feat worth experiencing. Cornerback James Bradberry fractured his wrist in training camp today after an awkward collision with linebacker Luke Keuchley. Despite being in a cast for 6 weeks Bradberry is expected to be back to full health in time for training camp.

Christian McCaffrey spend a brief amount of time with his new team over the weekend. Luke Keuchley said of the Panther’s first-round draft pick, “He’s going to be a nightmare for us”.

McCaffrey is restricted from fully joining the team until his academic year ends which is June 9th. You can read more at Panthers.com and NFL.com.

Coach Ron Rivera stated that Cam Newton’s rehab on his rotator cuff is ahead of schedule and he is expected to return to throwing the week of June 12th.
