On Sunday, Lineback/Safety Jeremy Cash put a low hit on Christian McCaffrey and was removed from practice.

On Tuesday the Panthers waived Safety Dean Marlowe after suffering an injury during practice at Fan Fest on Friday night.

On Wednesday the Panthers opened the preseason with a win over the Houston Texans 27-17. Highlights from the game include a jumping touchdown by Kelvin Benjamin, the debut of Christian McCaffrey, a more stable offensive line, an aggressive defensive line and the emergence of Damiere Byrd.

Defensive Tackle Vernon Butler went down during the game. Though the injury looked bad an MRI shows there are no torn ligaments in his knee so it can be considered a sprain. Optimistic predictions for Butler’s return are 2 to 3 weeks with some even more optimistic saying 1 week. Jeremy Igo at Carolina Huddle is a little more realistic predicting Butler’s return around week 3 against the New Orleans Saints on September 24th, though he could be eligible to return earlier against San Francisco or Buffalo but, as Igo writes, why risk further injury?

The preseason isn’t fairing well for some former Panthers. With the Vikings Mike Remmers put on a poor performance that gave way to an early quarterback sack. With the Saints Ted Ginn dropped a catch in the end zone and Mike Tolbert failed to convert on 3rd-and-1.

On Friday Bryan Strickland at Panthers.com reported that Curtis Samuel’s minor strain on his hamstring is keeping him away from practice. There is no timeline for Samuel to return to the field.

The Panthers travel to Nashville for the second pre-season game to face the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is at 3PM on Saturday August 19th. For Monday, July 31st, 2017 here is your roundup of Panthers news and story links.

Typically News Blitzes are 2 to 3 minutes but this one is special. Our own Ashlyn is attending training camp in her hometown of Spartanburg, SC and she got to speak with several Roaring Riot chapters. We will hear from Roaring Riot leaders and members from Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville, Atlanta, Baltimore, Columbia and Spartanburg, SC.

The Panthers announced their jersey schedule today, much earlier than in previous years. As usual the Panthers will wear their white uniforms until week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The exception being in week 6 color rush game vs. the Eagles when they will wear their all-blue uniform. Blue uniforms will also make an appearance week 9 against the Falcons.

During the preseason the Panthers will wear white jerseys for their home games, blue when they face the Titans and will finish up the preseason wearing their black jerseys in Jacksonville.

The first weekend of Panthers training camp is in the books with few breaking news headlines, which is good news as we are not reporting on major injuries nor major fights, aside from a minor scuffle that was quickly broken up.

The injury report is short but significant with Captain Munnerlyn the only veteran who is limited due to a hamstring issue. He is considered day-to-day. Also considered day-to-day is rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel who is also nursing a hamstring injury. The future is less bright for rookie cornerback Corn Elder, who was expected to back up Munnerlyn. Elder has been diagnosed with a patella stress fracture in his knee which could wind him up on the Physically-Unable to Perform list.

The first full weekend in Spartanburg was a treat for the fans as well. Several Roaring Riot members and chapters converged on Wofford for the first ever Riot Roundup, coordinated by the Upstate Roaring Riot chapter.

On Monday it was announced that interim General Manager Marty Hurney fired long-time director of pro personnel Mark Knocz. Knocz was promoted to that position in May by recently-fired General Manager Dave Gettleman.  Knocz had been with the Panthers organization since 1994 when he started in the ticket office as an intern, later to be hired on in the football operations department.

On Tuesday as players arrived at training camp in Spartanburg it was announced that DE Ryan Delaire and WR Charles Johnson were released from the team. Delaire failed his physical while Johnson was waived/injured after knee surgery. The Panthers added former Packers and Seahawks Center Greg Van Roten.

Rookie Curtis Samuel arrived at training camp in an unconventional fashion: he was dropped off by his mom.

Training Camp officially kicked off Wednesday in Spartanburg!

Coach Ron Rivera remarked that Cam Newton looked a bit rusty but quickly returned to form as be began throwing for the first time since his shoulder surgery earlier this year.

Get used to hearing “Cam to McCaffrey” as several plays involved Cam and CMC.

On Thursday

Amini Silatolu was spotted working out with the second team at the left tackle position. Silatolu was drafted by the Panthers in the second round in 2012. He started as right guard in 15 games of the 2012 season and did not play last season. He was re-signed by the Panthers earlier this season.

On Friday

After what started as a relatively quiet and uneventful camp, the first fight broke out between offensive lineman Dan France and Safety Dezmen Southward. The skirmish was quickly broken up.

Also on Friday two cornerbacks missed practice: Captain Munnerlyn was limited to the stationary bike.

Bill Voth of the Panthers reports rookie Corn Elder underwent an MRI in Charlotte on Thursday which showed a stress fracture of his patella. Elder is considered week to week at this point but Erik Sommers writes for Cat Scratch Reader that this injury is rare and slow to heal so Elder could expect to land on Injured Reserve.

Sommers also reports that at Punter Andy Lee holds the favorite over Michael Palardy and Kelvin Benjamin dropped a couple of catchable passes.

Curtis Samuel sat out with a hamstring injury as did Ryan Kalil who is still recovering from a shoulder injury from last season.

What last weekend appeared to be a mundane week for the Panthers was anything but when Monday general manager Dave Gettleman was relieved of his duties. Jerry Richardson made the announcement via Panthers.com.

On Wednesday it was confirmed that former Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney was brought in to serve as interim general manager. Hurney joined the Panthers front office in 1998 and was promoted to General Manager in 2002. He served as GM until October 2012 when he was fired after the Panthers abysmal 1-5 start. After he was fired the Panthers lose the following game against the Bears and former coach John Fox eventually finishing the season 7-9.

One day after bringing back Hurney, on Thursday the Panthers announced a 4-year, $45-million-dollar contract extension for offensive lineman Trai Turner. ProFootballTalk reports that Turner received a $15-million-dollar signing bonus. Cat Chronicles reports that Turner’s agreement makes him the NFL’s second-highest paid right guard behind Cleveland’s Kevin Zeitler {Zite-ler} who inked a 5-year, $60-million-dollar agreement with $23 million guaranteed. Offensive Tackle, Michael Oher has been release by the Carolina Panthers after reports of a failed physical. Oher had been with the team for just 2 seasons and spent the last 9 months in the concussion protocol without being cleared to return to team activities.

Oher’s release comes as fans are still reeling from the firing of General Manager David Gettleman this past Monday and the return of Marty Hurney as interim GM. However, this move was not a huge surprise to fans. Last month, our own Ashlyn Rizzo speculated that he would be cut prior to training camp.

In other Panthers news, Pro Bowl Offensive Guard, Trai Turner has agreed to a 4-year extension with the Carolina Panthers. He received a $15 million signing bonus, with $20.5 million guaranteed of a $45 million dollar deal. ESPN reports that this makes Turner the 3rd highest paid guard in the league at $11.2 million per year. This is the first move for Marty Hurney 2.0 and expect more to come throughout the remaining of the off-season.
