The March long weekend of 2024 saw the hosting of the annual Senior Womens Country Week Carnival in the Bunbury, Leschenault and Harvey Regions of WA Country. In what turned out to be an outstanding 3 days of Cricket across two grades, the final of the Womens A section in particular resulted in one of the greatest finishes seen in WA Country Cricket history. In this episode of Out on the Paddock, you can hear or relive how it all unfolded and ended up, with live commentary of the dramatic final ball. Also in this episode, is an interview with a very passionate Cricket lover and somebody who is impacting WA Country Cricket through her work at WA Cricket - Alex Lascu. A new season of Out on the Paddock for 2024, kicks off with a bang as we put the spotlight on what are the options for older guys in WA Regional Cricket to get involved with a movement that continues to grow rapidly each year here in Australia ... Veterans Cricket. In this episode, we hear from Nathan King from Burekup Cricket Club, who has recently represented WA in the Over 40s National Championships and then had an opportunity of dreams come to pass, landing a seat on a plane to head off to Pakistan as a part of the Australian Over 40s team for the World Cup. It is a great story and one that could inspire you or someone you know to consider the same opportunities. We then hear from Anthony Telfer ... a man who is an amazing ambassador here in Australia for Veterans Cricket and through his exceptional program "The Spirit of Cricket" is making sure that if you are Over 40 through to Over 70 ... Craig Tonkin is an Albany Cricket legend and favourite son of all things Cricket in the Great Southern. His career spanned over 3 decades playing at the highest level in that region and his ability to win games with either bat or ball in hand, are the stuff of folklore in the bush. "Tonks" as he is known to most of those who know him, carved out a career with North County CC and with the Albany Cricket Association at Mens Senior Country Week, that most could only dream of having. But more importantly, Craig climbed to the top of what Country Cricket offers here in Australia, representing WA at multiple Australian Country Cricket Championships and along the way, etched his name in the record books in a number of categories still to this day for performances at the ACCC. The ultimate allrounder ... arguably there may not have been too many better in WA Country Cricket in the past century. In July 2023, WA Country Cricket announced the newly appointed Coach of the WA Country XI Mens team, former WA State Player, Shawn Gillies. In this episode, we hear of Shawn's story of arriving as a youngster in WA all the way from Jamaica and how the influence of watching the mighty West Indies teams of the 80's and 90's, gave him direction and a passion to try and play Cricket at the highest possible level, himself. Shawn describes the many challenges of trying to get a regular position in the WA team, during a period where allrounders were in abundance in this State, along with recalling a number of amazing opportunities to play against some of the Worlds best Cricketers of the early parts of this century. Dealing with racism, playing for Australia in Hong Kong, Cricket in Sweden and what he enjoys and values now about playing WA Country Cricket, all are given a run in this episode. But it is his new found challenge and some of the approaches he plans to undertake in Coaching the WA Country XI, that very much come through in this interview. Episode 18 of Out on the Paddock features one of the biggest contributors that has shaped WA Country Cricket in our time - Steve Philippe. Steve recently announced that his time as WA Country Cricket Manager at WA Cricket (the WACA) was at an end after more than two decades ... and what better way to acknowledge his incredible. contribution to our sport in Regional WA, than to hear from the man himself as he shares much of that journey with us along with his growing up years out in the bush and the influences that his family both early and of late, have had on his life. His Cricket journey as a player is explored in this interview, along with his struggles with injury that deprived him of greater honours and what these challenges led him to next.
