ARE YOU THE BEST ADVOCATE FOR YOUR LIFE?

In my life as an attorney I can advocate for my client zealously! I know I can create the best case for my client why they are not guilty, why their life sucked, how can the system set them up for success, and how can we get them the help they truly need!

It is easy to do that and I have the training and education to do it easily!

However when it comes to my personal life I end up in the cheap seats!

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!

Bullies are in every profession and the legal field is no exception to the rule. I am not sure if it a chauvinistic thing or just downright being an ASSHOLE!

Our legal profession is filled with people who take their FEARS, ANGER, and FRUSTRATIONS out on others.

Today like so many other days I had a male attorney THREATEN me and state that he was going after me for fees and costs!

I get tired of the ugly comments from opposing counsel, threats of sanctions and the most irritating is that I am UNETHICAL.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am the farthest thing from being UNETHICAL.

I think to myself what is bad in their life that they have to take it out on me?

Who has hurt them so bad that they feel the need to demean me?

Lastly, this has nothing to do with me it is all about them!

Don’t get me wrong this didn’t come easily or without practice by any means. This is a muscle I constantly have to work otherwise I might have to HIRE MY OWN CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY!

I see this anger in the system quit frequently and yet our profession is doing nothing about it. There are only 8 states that require any sort of mental health and wellness continue education credits and Colorado is not one of them.

Our profession is running around with their hair on fire. The insanity needs to stop!...what goes around comes around!

NO good lawyer goes unpunished!

I am on several women’s lawyer Facebook groups! At least once a day a woman practicing law for about 10 or more years makes a post saying something to the effect "I AM BURNED OUT" "I FEEL MISERABLE" I WANT OUT"

I so remember being there and questioning my sanity! These were some of the thoughts running through my head!

I had gone to school for 7 years and your going to give all that up?

I had student loan debt.

What else was I going to do with my law degree? The only thing I have ever dreamed about was being a lawyer!

Until one day I couldn’t deny it any longer! My health was declining and I didn’t have any answers!

I knew that I wanted to be HAPPY.

I for sure wanted to be HEALTHY again.

I was craving passion and excitement for my life!

Lord knows I wanted to stop running around like a chicken with my head cut off!

I went on a soul searching journey because I knew there was MORE for me out there than what I had been KILLING myself for.

I went and played like a KID again at amusement parks, the pool and left my calendar, phone, and email at the office.

I said NO to so much except ME for several months!

During that journey.... I took the time to breathe and listen to my body!

I followed the bread crumbs until they lead me to my true heart’s desire!

The only thing on my calendar with fun!

Again and I repeat this more for me than to YOU! I SAID NO! It is a full and complete sentence.

Women tend to give, give, give and forget to replenish the well.

As a woman lawyer, I see way to often other women staying in a career that they are no longer passionate about.

Struggling with health issues!

Being downright MISERABLE because no good lawyer goes unpunished!

I learned to get real with myself and put my ego/lawyer mentality aside. Follow my intuition that I had let get trampled on by my brain! Heal old thoughts and beliefs about who I was if I wasn’t a lawyer and SPREAD MY WINGS AND FLY!

BEING A LAWYER IS KILLING YOU...BUT HEY THE MONEY IS GOOD!

Well, the first part is 100% true and the second part is debatable!

I saw this post and immediately knew I had to write about it. This is exactly what I have been talking about. I started to scroll through the comments and I saw nothing NEW.

Women lawyers GRINDING IT OUT! per the USUAL!

I WAS THERE TOO!

Nothing in law school prepares you for work life. In law school, I was taught how to brief a case, how to do legal research and how to argue a case!

The big joke was the first year they scare you to death! The second-year they work you to death and the third year they BORE you to DEATH!

What I KNOW for a fact is they taught me nothing about balance, exercising and eating healthy and nothing about mental and emotional stability. It wasn’t uncommon to hear people working 80-90 hour work weeks thinking about nothing other than billable hours!

For me, a BRAIN TUMOR WAS THE LAST STRAW! This was enough for me to say if I get a second bite at the apple I am going to do things differently the second time around.

Just like the comments in the post I see women lawyers...

Sparing with their significant other. Maybe they want a significant other and work-life is getting in the way of that DREAM.

Struggling to be a part of their kids lives or maybe no kids due to the pressure and stress and fertility is an issue.

Grappling with inner demons that are keeping them stuck?

Wrestling with putting THEMSELVES FIRST!

Does all of this sound WAY TO FAMILIAR?

I AM EVERYONE OF THOSE COMMENTS. I didn’t have a significant other! I wanted a baby and fertility was an issue! Do I stay or do I go was a constant conversation in my head! I clearly wasn’t putting myself FIRST!

We women stay STUCK because the FEAR of the POSSIBILITIES is GREATER than the FEAR of MISERY!

Your body is YEARNING to be happy and content again. Remember those days before law school when you were happy go lucky, not run by your calendar and cell phone!

Take some time to get REAL with yourself. Is this what you signed up for the rest of your LIFE?

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION!

It is time for us women to listen to our inner wisdom/mother’s intuition. Whatever you call that inner voice whispering to you.

Allow the time to heal those inner demons that are KEEPING YOU STUCK!

LASTLY, DARE TO DREAM WHAT IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF MONEY!

I THINK I WILL SKIP GOLF SO I CAN GO HOME AND DO THE LAUNDRY SAID NO MAN EVER!

I like so many other women in the legal profession don’t take time for ourselves!

This is a guaranteed recipe for disaster.

TAKING OUT THE GARBAGE!

Just some OLD IDEAS THAT WERE TAKING UP TOO MUCH SPACE!

I saw this post where a bird was asking what the other bird was doing.

The bird was throwing away things like "I am no good" "failure" "looser" "ugly" "fat" I think you get the point.

It reminded me of thoughts, beliefs, values, and patterns that I was holding onto or had released already that weren’t serving me.

From the time you are born to the time you are five years old, you have 50% of your thoughts, beliefs, and values. My the time you are 18 you have 90% of your thoughts, beliefs, and values.

This is who you will be FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

HOW SCARY IS THAT!

These thoughts have been instilled and may not even be your own if you actually break it down. We believe 2 + 2 is 4 because someone told us. Is this right I HAVE NO CLUE!

Your thoughts around religion?

Your thoughts around marriage or divorce?

Your thoughts around money?

Your thoughts around work/career?

These are all things we have mostly been taught. Do you remember being a kid and hearing your parents maybe say "money doesn’t grow on trees" or "we can’t afford that" on the other hand if you grew up in a house where money was free-flowing you might have heard something like "yes you can have that" or "money does grow on trees"

These are all things that affect your thoughts around MONEY!

Just like those things women lawyers have other thoughts that keep them stuck and miserable in a profession that is running around with their hair on FIRE!

We as women are miserable and we then get into a fight with our husband and he is thinking what the hell did I do.

We are late to pick up our kids because we are overworked and underpaid.

We are frustrated because opposing counsel is BEING A BULLY!

We are upset because the judge ruled against us even though the case law was clear and you feel like you are in the twilight zone!

All we want to do is be HAPPY AND HAVE A GLASS OF WINE!

Yet we have to be open to what is possible and that means we have to take out the GARBAGE!

We have to declutter our mind and be open to WHAT IS POSSIBLE BEING OUT OF THE LAW~

It’s time to get our LIFE BACK and truly listen to what it is that we truly want and let those old thoughts be hauled out to the TRASH!

Get real with yourself, listen to what is calling you, heal those old thoughts that are no longer serving you and BREAK FREE!
