On Outside 50's Ep30 we talked with Katie Klatt a Sacramento Sun, San Francisco Iron Maiden, Vice Captain of the USA Freedom, a Melbourne Uni Mugar and now a potential Boston Lady Demon.
Katie was one of the first U.S. women to travel to Australia to try and make it in the AFLW. Since then, she’s back in the States obtaining her Master’s Degree at Harvard while looking to take a more relaxed approach to the game.
The women’s game has grown so much over the years, and Katie loves seeing the continual improvement of competition. Katie recommends women players to take the game seriously if they want to compete in Australia and also to fine tune and really work on basic skills.
While in Boston, Katie is likely to connect with the Boston Demons to train which will be her third USAFL club, but overall is just looking forward to being back on the field like the rest of us during these COVID times.

Ep29 of Outside 50 we sat down with Colin Smith, President of the Boston Demons. The theme of the episode kept revolving around camaraderie and how much of a close-knit group the Demons truly are, especially being one of the oldest clubs in the USAFL.
Over the years, the club has managed to be successful because of the bond shared by its players. As President, Colin really explains how he really wants to push for more recruitment in the coming seasons, and to continue to develop local areas to play metro games as well as continuing to strengthen the women’s team and women's involvement in the club.
The Boston Demons club in regular years usually look forward to playing teams like Montreal and Portland, however, with the uncertainty of this season the Demons are trying to get some training going while just keeping their always cohesive culture game strong.

On this Episode 28 of the Outside 50 podcast, we have a chat with Simon Ansell from the LA Dragons Football Club. Simon arrived in Los Angeles from Sydney a few years back and got involved with the Dragons pretty soon thereafter.
Simmo talks candidly with us about the positive welcome that he's received so far, the growth of the game in the States, and his own unique perspective growing up in the rugby league-dominant Sydney suburbs.
Simmo also relates how the LA is probably the best place in the USA to play footy with weather that suits all year round play and those social activities that we all know coincide well with footy clubs.
You can find the LA Dragons on all Social Media apps of course and visit their website at www.ladragons.com

Ep27 of Outside 50 changes gears a little as we chat about the coaching side of footy with Des Moines Rooster, Donnie Hess.
Being in “America’s Heartland,” there are a different breed of players who are predominately American and have a love for the physical side of the sport.
Donnie recently transitioned over into the head coach for the Roosters, but has a strong background in coaching his local youth basketball team. Donnie also discusses the fate of the 80/35 tournament that the club hosts yearly and how he hopes the women’s side can grow from the tournament as well.
Donnie attributes the success and strength of the Roosters to having such a great group of men and women who have developed strong bonds and friendships over the years. If you need anything, the Roosters are always there for their teammates.

Ep25 of Outside 50 has one of the most involved footy players in the United States, NY Magpie's Drea Casillas. Some might even call her Wonder Woman, Drea talks all things women’s footy from her many roles with starting the NY Lady Magpies to playing on the US Freedom team to being a founder of the Women’s Association and a former board member of the league and now President of the NY Magpies club itself. Wow.
Drea's impressive athletic background also lends her to be a role model and leader on the off the field for women’s footy. She’s one of the strongest and most determined players in US footy today. Drea in 2019 played at her 14th USA Nationals after recently giving birth to her son last year.
Committed to continually growing the game of footy across the US and especially for her home team in New York, Drea's leadership of the women NY Magpies inspires an entire club, driven for success on the field, but also having a sense of community and involvement for all men and women, to be able to feel welcomed into an Aussie Rules Football family.

Great Ep23 today with guests Stu Nicol and Al MacGlashan of the Chicago Swans FC. Both Stu and Al have a long history to talk about with footy here in the USA, Al especially who first starting seeking out sports to play in Chicago in 1999 after originally coming over from Geelong Victoria, for a 6 month working holiday.
Stu is more recent but a true Chicago legend already, reports also an unusual path to footy in Chicago as being a native Scotsman he has been able to represent Scotland in the Euro Cup on two occasions. Stu has a real passion for the game and its growth but also the social events that come with the game, and that bind a team like the Swans together, and has done so for many many years.
With the intro of women's footy to Chicago recently and that part of the club growing exponentially, Stu and Al relate how great it is to have now women playing in a Chicago uniform but also taking key roles on the administration of the sport.

Ep22 of Outside 50 showcases newly appointed President of the Wisconsin Wombats, Caitlin O’Malley and her efforts to increase recognition of the club and recruitment efforts in the coming year. Caitlin is one of the few women Presidents across the USAFL and has a unique perspective on how to best grow her club as she takes a more active role on the administration side of footy.
Currently a Division 4 club, she sees the Wombats moving up divisions in just a few years’ time with the expansion of the club and skill development of the players. The Wombats struggle with retention and recruitment as do many clubs that are in more transient cities, however, Caitlin coming in with new ideas and her leadership skills will no doubt improve efforts to increase numbers.
The Wombats pride themselves on coming together as a close-knit group of players turned friends, that all happen to enjoy the great game of footy, with Caitlin leading the way to a bigger, always improving club.

Outside 50 with your hosts Rick Shaibani, Tara Cilke and Ben Martinez
Ep21 of Outside 50 is a fantastic chat with Paddy Smallwood of the Bogota Bulldogs in Colombia Sth America. Paddy originally from Bairnsdale 3 hrs south east of Melbourne, tells of his journey to establishing one of the first teams in Sth America and certainly the first team to play games against USA teams.
The Bogota Bulldogs hit the world footy news recently when they played games against the reigning USAFL National Champions the Austin Crows and then the Crows main adversaries the Denver Bulldogs.
Starting and building an Aussie Rules team in a non English speaking nation like Colombia is no easy task, and takes a lot of work and luck as Paddy relates and given that Sth American countries are so entrenched in the game of soccer, it is hats of to Paddy and his clubmates to see what they have achieved so far.
As we know footy is in hold for now, but the Bogota Bulldogs have high hopes still of playing games regularly in the USA whilst further developing the game south of the equator.
You can find out more about the Bogota on their website http://www.bogotabulldogs.com/
