Second hand car prices have been on a roller coaster ride with the impact of COVID, semi conductor shortages and geo political instabilities.

Tanim Ahmed is Head of Business Intelligence & Product at Datium Insights which provide industry information particularly on the price of second hand cars.

He summariesed the fluctuations since 2019

So prices increased for about to about one and a half, two years, and it peaked around March, April last year where prices were about 50% higher than where they were pre-COVID. So an average $10,000 car, you're going to look at spending 15,000. This is a massive, massive increase. And that's something that's been, you know, consistent with overseas markets as well. So if you look at the US, if you look at Europe, the UK, they experienced very similar trends, very strong price growth even over very New Zealand. Price growth wasn't as strong, but it was just very similar trend. However, since March, April last year, that trend has reversed.

Currently second hand prices are around 40% higher than the beginning of 2020 and are not predicted to get all the way back to the pre COVID levels

1. In our features segment we talk to Phil Latz who is organising Australia’s first Micromobility conference and expo. Micromobility encompasses traditional bikes, electric bikes, cargo bikes, e-scooters, and share schemes among other things. The great thing about the expo which is held at a large racecourse in Sydney with plenty of space and paths, is that you can have a go of these devices in a safe environment. Its free to the public if you register on line. (6:34)

• Two years ago we road tested the Toyota Granvia (the replacement for the Tarago) people mover- Ugly on the outside but with six captains chairs rather comfortable on the inside. We took five adults on a Sunday drive

Now they have upgraded the model we thought we would test it from another potential market – the young family

• I was one of the presenters at a recent webinar run by the Australian Institute of traffic planning and management. The session was titled 'Modelling Data Collection and Workflow Planning'

Sounds a bit dry but it is something that affects us all. Rather than getting technical I asked how are the results being used and how could all the work be better used to help the community more than just validating a proposed project.
