Heston Russell, Retired Special Forces Major & founder of 'Voice Of A Veteran', joins Luke Grant with his thoughts on the looming August 31 deadline for the evacuation of Afghanistan.

 

This will be a tough day for many who served. 

 

A joint statement released by Britain, the United States and other countries, says,

“We are all committed to ensuring that our citizens, nationals and residents, employees, Afghans who have worked with us and those who are at risk can continue to travel freely to destinations outside Afghanistan.”

 

“We have received assurances from the Taliban that all foreign nationals and any Afghan citizen with travel authorization from our countries will be allowed to proceed in a safe and orderly manner to points of departure and travel outside the country.”

 

The statement said the countries, which also included Australia, Japan, France, Spain and many others, would continue to issue travel documents to designated Afghans.

Luke Grant speaks with Senator Eric Abetz, Liberal Senator for Tasmania, who welcomes the move by the Australian Government to implement a compensation scheme for those who suffer serious side effects from vaccination.  

 

Senator Abetz wrote to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Health on 2 June 2021, calling for compensation after a Tasmanian constituent was hospitalised for 16 days after receiving his first jab and which significantly affected his health and income. 

 

The constituent, while battling health issues, was keen to reduce vaccine hesitancy in those who had heard of his experience by pushing for the implementation of a compensation scheme.

 

One month later, on 2 July, the Australian Government announced the establishment of a COVID-19 Vaccine Claim Scheme by assuring Australians that “health professionals, including GPs, nurses and pharmacists administering COVID vaccines as part of the Commonwealth vaccination program have appropriate indemnity coverage.”

 

Now, the Government has announced the finalised details of the no-fault COVID-19 Vaccine Claim Scheme.

Cameron Stewart, Associate Editor at The Australian newspaper, who wrote in his latest opinion piece that Australia’s Covid-19 mindset must change if we are ever to open up the country.

 

Mr Stewart writes, ‘Australia is finally beginning the most important mental adjustment of this pandemic as it grasps what the rest of the world has known for months – that the ­unavoidable price of freedom from Covid-19 is the acceptance of death.’

 

‘We are not talking about just a few deaths but many deaths, possibly in the thousands, if Australia is to join the rest of the Western world in opening up and resuming something approximating normal life.’

 

‘It’s a jarring but necessary transition for a country that prided itself on a low death count during the deadliest phase of the pandemic last year and then became addicted to the fantasy idea that zero Covid was possible into the future.’

Australia’s space industry is taking off

 

Michael is joined by Professor Phil Bland, Director of Curtin University’s Space Science and Technology Centre, who is part of a small group of Perth researchers to have made Western Australian history and prove Australia is capable of designing and building its own satellites.

 

About 30 people, staff and students from Curtin University’s Space Science and Technology Centre, are working on the The Binar-1 project which is the first WA-made satellite to be launched into space. 

 

Professor Bland says it won't be the last, hoping they will soon be used to help NASA return to the moon.

“The Binar Space Program has six more launches planned over the next 18 months. For context, in its history our nation has only flown 15 Australian-built spacecraft. Our novel design allows us to make spacecraft affordable, and space accessible for WA innovators,” Professor Bland said.
