Life pulls our hearts in a hundred different directions. The Psalms call us back to God. Have you ever felt like giving up? Like you’ve been faithfully serving, praying, working, or loving, but you’re simply running out of strength? What does waiting for Jesus have to do with Monday morning? Apparently, everything. As Paul moves toward the close of his second letter to the Thessalonians, he addresses believers who had become so preoccupied with the future that they had stopped faithfully engaging the present. Instead of quiet faithfulness, their lives had become marked by idleness, disorder, and disruption. In this message, continuing our series Good News for the End of the World, we’ll discover how the hope of Christ’s return calls us not to withdraw from ordinary life, but to faithfully embrace the work God has placed before us today.

People are obsessed with the end of the world, but we spend far less time thinking about our personal ending in this life. Maybe it's too hard to think about. Yet for the Apostle Paul, the assurance of life that comes through Jesus Christ removes the sting of our own mortality and actually gives us purpose; to pray for and participate in the ever-expanding work of taking the life-changing Gospel to every person, tribe, and tongue. We do that with the confidence that God promises to hold on to us forever. 

Have you ever gotten one of those scam emails? The kind that looks just real enough to make you pause. That’s how deception works. The Thessalonians received a counterfeit message claiming the day of the Lord had already come, leaving them shaken, deceived, and afraid. In this message, we continue our 1 and 2 Thessalonians series, we’ll wrestle with one of Paul’s most debated chapters—including the mysterious “man of lawlessness”—and discover a steadying truth: in a world of counterfeit voices, God calls us to love the truth and stand firm, because Jesus is still on the throne and he holds his people fast.

Judgment day. Good news. Those two things do not usually belong in the same sentence. But in 2 Thessalonians 1, Paul would disagree. Writing to a church under pressure, squeezed for their faith, Paul gives the coming judgment of God not as a threat to frighten them, but as a gift to steady them. God sees their suffering. God will right every wrong. And the glory of Jesus that awaits them is already changing them now. Listen in as we discover why all will be set right, and why that changes how we live today.

If you knew Jesus was coming tomorrow, what would you do today? As Paul concludes his first letter to the Thessalonians, he gives a surprisingly practical picture of what the grace of Jesus produces in his people. Grace teaches us to honor leaders, live patiently with one another, rejoice, pray, give thanks, listen to the Spirit, hold fast to what is good, and trust the God of peace to keep us until Jesus comes. It may feel like drinking from a fire hydrant, but this is not a random list of commands. This is God’s grace at work among us, within us, and keeping us until the end. Have you ever scrambled at the last minute to clean up your house, knowing guests were on the way? Often, we’ve treated the coming of Jesus this way. Many throughout history have tried to predict the day and time in order to make frantic preparations. The Thessalonians were anxious about this day, too. What they needed most, though, was not a timeline but to return to the basics of their hope in Christ and what it looks like to live in his light. For anyone who trusts in Jesus, his second coming should not cause fear, but encourage a hopeful, faithful, eyes-wide-open life, until he sets all things right.

Our culture often tells us death is natural, inevitable, and simply part of the cycle of life. But something deep in us keeps protesting: This cannot be the end. Death is the great enemy we all must face, and it often raises one of life’s deepest questions: Did I live a good life? In 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, Paul writes to grieving believers with hope strong enough to face the grave itself. Because Jesus died, rose again, and will return, Christians can grieve honestly, but never hopelessly. Death is real. Grief is real. But because of Jesus, death is not the last word.

For many of us, work feels like one of two extremes: we’re either shooting for the moon, trying to achieve more and make a name for ourselves, or we’re stuck in the monotony, simply trying to get through the day. Whether you’re working a job, raising children, studying, looking for work, or retired, your daily labor reveals what you’re living for. In 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12, Paul gives us a surprising vision: grow in love, live quietly, and work faithfully. This message explores how the gospel rescues our ambition and turns ordinary work into a life of worship that truly matters.
