The gospel does not only give us hope for the future. It gives us a new way to live right now. In 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8, Paul shows how the return of Jesus reshapes even one of the most personal and vulnerable areas of life: our sexuality. In a culture that says freedom comes from following our desires, Scripture points us to a better foundation: Jesus himself. His way does not shrink our lives. It restores us, marking us with holiness, healing, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes life can make us guarded. Hurt teaches us to keep people at a distance. So instead of relational warmth, we settle for cold distance. We stay courteous, but closed. Deep down, though, that is not what we are made for. In our passage this week, Paul shows us something better. His words to the church in Thessalonica come loaded with love. They carry the weight of his heart and show us what the gospel creates as we wait for Jesus to return: friendships that love deeply, strengthen intentionally, and pray expectantly.

The Gospel is not just about being forgiven and going to heaven. It also has the power to change lives here, and now those changed lives speak to the truth and power of the Gospel, resulting in more changed lives. Paul demonstrated that Gospel power in his life and urged the Thessalonian Christians to live a Gospel-focused life that matched the faith they had in Jesus. 

When many people think about the end of the world, they think fear, confusion, and speculation. But in 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Paul gives us gospel hope. Few of his other letters keep the return of Christ so clearly before us. We live not only in light of Christ’s death and resurrection, but also in the sure hope of his return, when he will make all things new. That hope is not meant to make us anxious, but faithful as we live in the new life he has given us.

What if the future were so certain, so good, that it changed how you experience everything today? The apostle Paul says Christianity rises or falls on one question: has Jesus Christ been raised from the dead?

Easter invites us to consider that claim and its extraordinary implications. If the tomb is empty, then hope is not wishful thinking — it is reality. In that low place we meet the One who made himself small, riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and going to the cross to conquer our proud hearts. But in Proverbs 30, a little known sage named Agur prays a surprising prayer: “Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me.” It is a prayer that confronts our restless hearts and invites us to trust God for what we truly need. Into our great need, The Proverbs paint a counter-cultural picture of friendship as an essential, yet beautifully costly aspect of human flourishing. What if we don't need new innovation, but a more ancient path to live well in our lonely age? The Proverbs saves its best humor for the sluggard. A man turning in bed like a door on its hinges. A hand too tired to lift food to his mouth.
