"Ekklesia" all throughout the Old Testament is used to describe God's chosen people, the Church, gathering together. When Paul refers to the Christians of Thessalonica as an "ekklesia," it is meant to remind them that they are "in Christ." In the midst of persecution and suffering, they can be encouraged and comforted because their salvation is secure as God's chosen people.
