Nearly 4,000 people gathered in Fayetteville Tuesday night to protest the killing of George Floyd by a white Minneapolis police officer last month. The event started with speakers and a moment of silence and was followed by a march around the downtown square. The protest lasted until after midnight and despite some tense moments, it remained peaceful.

On Tuesday, Governor Asa Hutchinson reported the state's highest single-day increase in community cases of COVID-19 with 375 new positives out of more than 3,800 tests. Benton County had 65 new cases, meanwhile Washington County had 57. There were also an additional three deaths from the virus, bringing the total to 136. Gov. Asa Hutchinson recently announced an effort to test all nursing home residents and staff in the state for COVID-19 during the month of June. Dr. Naveen Patil with the Arkansas Department of Health says the initiative, which includes testing residents at other facilities in addition to nursing homes, could result in more than 60,000 tests.

More than a thousand people gathered on the Bentonville square Monday evening to protest the murder of George Floyd by a former Minneapolis police officer and the killings of other black men by white law enforcement officers. The protest began peacefully, but tensions escalated after sunset and police repeatedly used tear gas to disperse protesters, who are accused of throwing water bottles and rocks at officers, as well as vandalizing two police vehicles.

The Arkansas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which own the Confederate soldier monument on the Bentonville square, has reached an agreement with the Benton County Historical Society to relocate the statue to a private park that will be named after James H. Berry. The process of moving the monument, which was placed on the square in 1908, will begin in August.

Canopy Northwest Arkansas , a refugee resettlement agency in Fayetteville, is offering summer English language learning courses to all K through 12 students called Canopy Summer Success Team. Class enrollment is underway.
