P3: Prayer - Passion - Purpose

So, today we pick up with the letter John writes to the church of Smyrna. This letter is different from the others. The others tend to have praise, rebuke, encouragement, warning, and promise of a reward. Not only is this the shortest letter of the 7, but it is focused solely on encouragement with the promise of not being touched by the second death. This letter is written in a way that would indicate that they are facing intense persecution. Jesus wants them to know that He sees their afflictions and to stay strong and there will be great reward. Unlike 5 of the other churches, this one doesn’t receive any rebuke by Jesus.

Today, we jump right into the chapter 2 where John is told to write specific messages to each of the 7 churches or lamp stands. We begin with the Church of Ephesus. Each message begins with a slightly different description of Jesus, along with a praise and a rebuke, then a slightly different ending or reward for heeding His instruction. Remember, every detail matters and is intentional. That is what we are going to dive into today. Let’s take a look at the first letter and see what the Lord has to say and how it can bless our life.

I was talking to my daughter when it struck me how little she knew about the end times and the hope of what is to come. From the rapture, to the tribulation period, to the 2nd coming, to the thousand year reign, to the day of judgement, to the new heaven and a new earth. Unfortunately, the Book of Revelation is often avoided and is seen as the book of doom and gloom. It is avoided because it is difficult to understand or apply to your life. It can seem a bit overwhelming and frightful to most. I want to share my take on it...one of hope, promises kept, justice, patient love, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances…I read Revelation with joy and excitement because I see the love of God and the promises of something better in it.

Today we are going to dive into the troubles we find ourselves in when we seek the wrong counsel. Ananias planned to sell the land and keep some of the money while deceiving everyone into thinking he gave everything. Acts 5:2 says that he did this with his wife’s full knowledge. He did what most husbands do…he asked for permission…LOL…seriously though, he likely sought her out and got her approval or support to carryout this deception. With the support of someone like his wife he deceived himself into thinking it was ok. It is plausible that he used her support to justify his plan. We often seek co-conspirators or supporters when we know what we are doing is wrong. We want someone else to tell us it’s ok…that we are justified or right in what we are doing.

Today, we are going to talk about pretenders and the cautionary tale of deception in the body of Christ. God is still holy, and He still hates sin wholeheartedly. He will not be mocked and Ananias and his wife Sapphira find out the hard way that God is not fooled by the lies you tell others. Today, we are going to talk about God’s Anointed…more specifically, not speaking against God’s anointed. Do you know how you can tell God is about to do something big?…I mean BIG!!! When you see the most unlikely/ unqualified person step out in the strength they have to follow God’s call. When the whole world says this person isn’t qualified for this job or task…they don’t have what it takes…yet God calls them anyway. Today we are going to be talking about an individual that we don’t even know the name of. All we know about this guy’s backstory is that he was a thief who was being executed for his crimes. He, most likely, lived a life apart from God’s ways and did not follow His commandments. But there is another thief there with him, and the differences between the 2 are like night and day. This message is about a thief…a thief that comes face to face with the love, compassion, mercy, and grace of God. There is a powerful message in this short passage, and it comes from the heart of a thief.
