On this week’s No Shame we’re doing a debrief on our run to #100. Paddy looks back at some of the episodes that helped to establish the show as one of the most popular podcasts in Ireland.

 

Throughout the first #099 episodes, we’ve had all types of guest on the No Shame, including sports stars, coaches, comedians, artists, actors, directors, authors, musicians, activists & politicians. Some of the names that feature on the Debrief include, Damian Browne, Owen Roddy, Napoleon from the Outlawz, Kevin Kilbane, Jason Byrne, John Connors, Erin McGregor, Maverick Sabre & much more.

 

One of the driving reasons why Paddy set up the podcast was to show that no matter how famous or unknown a person is, ultimately we all experience the same emotions & we’re not that different on a personal level. Another fundamental reason for creating the podcast was to shine a light on aspects of society that certain areas of the media can sometimes choose to neglect. Some of the topics we’ve discussed on the show include the housing/homeless crisis, the climate crisis, the nurses strike, suicide prevention, the Free Palestine movement, psychedelics & mindfulness.

 

The odd conspiracy theory crops up every now & then also with an honourable mention going to Paddy’s noble effort to debunk the moon landings on episode #018 with The BDK, Kiefer Crosbie. As well as reviewing a selection of episodes Paddy also offers an honest breakdown of his own performance as a host during the formative years of the podcast. It’s only when we look back at Damian Browne on week 1 that we can see the evolution of Paddy Holohan as a host & No Shame as a production.

 

In truth we can hardly believe episode 100 is upon us, the time really has flown. It’s been two years of consistency, we haven’t missed a week since show began, every Tuesday a new episode is published. Things haven’t always ran smoothly, far from it at times. Sometimes the game plan goes completely out the window & it’s often in those unscripted moments that we’ve produced some of our very best content.

 

Ultimately When you have consistency, work ethic & attitude you’ve always got a chance of reaching the top. Paddy has proved that time & again whether in the world of MMA, podcasting or politics.

 

So that’s the first Debrief in the bag & it’s on to the next 100 episodes. It’s been an incredible journey so far. We’ve come a long way, with plenty of mistakes made & lessons learned. We’re far from the finished article too, with plenty of exciting plans ahead for 2020. As always a massive thank you for supporting the show. The fan engagement has become a vital part of the podcast’s success & it motivates us to constantly improve our output.

Aisling Daly joins us in the studio for episode #099 of Paddy Holohan's No Shame Podcast. Aisling is a retired pro MMA fighter, Ireland's first ever; MMA World Champion, female UFC fighter & BJJ blackbelt. Ais was Paddy's training partner for 10 years, they also cornered each other & coached one another during camps. Despite the fact he was  high up the ladder in the corporate world something wasn’t right on a personal level. Paddy was extremely unhappy on the inside. When he was in his early 30’s he came to the realisation that something needed to shift. This marked the beginning of an intense inward journey of spiritual development.

Paddy discusses the 10 years of practicing mindfulness before he began developing an idea for a workshop. 60 people showed up to his very first show & now he has a social media following of over 80,000. Its a great example of the work that’s required to experience success on a high level.

Brosnan focuses on one of his main teachings, the importance of being kind to one another & how there might be less war in the world if people applied that philosophy to daily life. Also on this weeks show, Brosnan tells us about the difference between an opinion, belief & thought.

Dr. Michael, Dr. Ronan & Dr. Imelda Connolly join us in the studio for episode #097 of Paddy Holohan's No Shame Podcast. The Connolly's are on the show to discuss some of their work, which includes potentially groundbreaking research on climate change. The Research suggests that the Greenhouse effect, or global warming as we know it, has been largely falsified & is accelerating nowhere near to pace that has been suggested by mainstream media.

The Mother, Father & Son trio operate the Connolly Scientific Research Group, based in Ireland. Since 2009 they have focused their attention primarily on Climate change. During the episode Michael, Ronan & Imelda give a breakdown of tests surrounding weather balloons, & share some comparative studies indicating previous research on the subject to be largely inaccurate.

The Connolly's also discuss some of the uphill battles they're facing against NGO's such as Greenpeace. The three doctors firmly believe that the climate change is a buzz word for big organisations to cash in on. There is also a healthy conversation during the podcast surrounding the carbon tax.

On the subject of Greta Thunberg & the Extinction Rallies currently taking place in Dublin, Imelda talks of her admiration for people choosing to fight for what they believe in, despite the fact she believes they've been miss informed on the situation due to media discourse & propaganda.

Dr. Michael & Dr. Ronan also discuss plastic, the affect it's having on our environment, along with the myths & the facts surrounding it. Ronan & Michael refer to the common mealworm & its ability to safely biodegrade plastic.

The episode finishes with an experiment looking at how air transports energy mechanically, almost instantaneously. The test highlights the fact that the atmosphere can't be measured  on thermal energy alone.

It's important to look at every side of the argument before making your mind up. This episode will get a lot of people thinking, it might divide some of our fans but we've always believed in getting the information out there for the viewer to decide for themselves. World renowned cutman, Joe Clifford, joins us in the studio for episode #094 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast. Joe is one of the very best in the fight game & one of the few cutmen in the world to make a full time living from his trade. Clifford has a successful background cornering in Pro Boxing & currently works for some of the biggest promotions in MMA including the UFC. Joe also runs a hugely successful Cutman Course across the globe which is sanctioned by AIBA, BUI, IMMAF & UFC.

Joe was born in the late 60’s & grew up in Crumlin. Living in Inner City Dublin in the 80’s certainly wasn’t easy for a kid. The City was engulfed by a heroine epidemic, there was no treatment for Aids or HIV at the time & people were literally dying on the streets. It was a rough area & fights were part & parcel of the culture. Joe’s father enrolled him into boxing so that his son could at the very least learn to defend himself.

Joe proved to be an extremely disciplined boxer, training twice a day & although not the most skilled, the attitude he developed from applying himself to combat sport, enabled the mindset that helped him to become a top corner man.

Joe talks to Paddy about different body types in MMA/boxing & the styles they produce as a result. Clifford recalls Paddy’s own unorthodox/ unconventional fighting style which made him so unique & impossible to predict. Joe compares Paddy's style to that of Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett.

Clifford discusses exactly how & why he became a cutman, the fundamentals of the role, along with examining the influence of the cutmen that came before, such as the great Jacob Duran. Joe also talks to Paddy about the significance of never cornering people that you know as it can affect you from carrying out your role to the best of your ability.

Joe recalls a particular occasion, the only time, when he cornered Albert Selimov, a fighter he’d been living with in Russia at the time. Clifford feels he didn’t perform his role to the best of his ability that day, trying out a new technique on  a world championship fight, which in return meant Selimov was unable to continue after obtaining a cut that couldn’t be stopped. If you’ve met Joe before you’ll know how much of Professional he Is and seeing how disappointed he still is over this isolated incident is testament to high standards he demands of himself. Ultimately it is about the safety of the fighter

Joe spends over 40 weeks of the year on the road travelling with work, despite this he still makes time to run road races/ Marathon’s together with his Younger brother Ciaran, who needs 24/7 care & suffers from Autism. Ciaran needs the use of a chair to race &  Joe tells the story of wheeling him through a Marathon in Berlin, surrounded by 40,000 Germans, one man of which was dressed in a beer bottle outfit. Ciaran was so impressed by the beer bottle that he grabbed on with force & after the runner broke free, Joe would spend the rest of the race weaving, ducking & diving to ensure history did not repeat itself, by his own admission, it was the fastest Marathon that Joe ever ran.

This is an incredibly unique episode with never before seen or heard insights into the life of cutman. Joe is an encyclopaedia of knowledge when it comes to the fight game, he's seen it all & it's an absolute pleasure to listen to his stories. The renowned Asad Abushark joins us in the studio for episode #093 of Paddy Holohan's No Shame Podcast. Asad is a Palestinian Human rights activist, he is on the show to discuss the Free Palestine movement, for which he is an Official Spokesperson.

During the show, Asad outlines a brief history of conflict between Palestine & Israel with particular focus on key events such as the Palestine War (1947-1949), the role of the British government in the formation of the Israeli State & the Right of Retainment. All of the above events ultimately contributed to Nakba, a mass exodus which saw an estimated 700,000 Palestinian's flee their own land after the Israeli Government completely violated the terms set by the United Nations in 1948, instead claiming the Palestinian Land for themselves.Paddy also discusses the role the western media are playing in the conflict by failing to to acknowledge many of the massacres & atrocities that the Palestinians have suffered at the hands of the Israelis. The crimes committed against Asad's nation simply aren't talked about on TV for various reasons discussed on the podcast & as a result most people don't seems to care or are unaware of the severity of the situation.Abushark message is ultimately one of peace & he states that Palestinians are prepared to live with people from all religious backgrounds & divides. Some of Asad's closest friends are Jewish & have helped greatly in his pursuit of a free Palestine.Asad is a guest we've wanted to get on the show for the long time, Paddy is a massive advocate for the Palestinian human rights movement & believes the Irish can have a big part to play in Palestine's fight for Sovereignty, just like they did with the Anti-Apartheid movement against the South African Government. In 1984, Mary Manning spearheaded the Dunnes Stores strike, when she refused to handle South African imported goods. The strike gained media attention & paved the way for the first complete ban of South African imports by a Western government.Another massive episode of No Shame, possibly one of the most politically relevant podcasts we've done to date. There are so many parallels between Palestine & the Irish war for independence, a war triggered by the leaders of the 1916 Rising over 100 years ago. The Ireland that we know today would not have existed if it wasn't for people like Asad, a man willing to risk his life so that his people can live in peace in the land that they came from.
