今回は、『The Girl on the Train』で知られるポーラ・ホーキンズさんの、『The Blue Hour』について。

正直に言うと、過去作のような「えっ嘘でしょ！」という衝撃的な結末を期待していた分、少しがっかりしてしまった一冊でもありました。

作家はすべての伏線を綺麗に回収する義務はないと分かっていながらも、どうしても私にとっては「未完成」に感じてしまったエンディング。

過去の読書体験が、私の中にどれだけ「勝手な期待値」を作ってしまっていたのか？そんな正直な読後感を、ありのままに語ります。

In this episode, I talk about my experience reading On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong.

Was it an immediate hit? No.

Was it a miss? Absolutely not.

I am still processing this book, and honestly, I genuinely do not know how I feel about it yet.

There are simply too many fragmented thoughts and feelings that I can't fully put into words to discuss the actual content. However, one thing I can say for sure is that I really, really liked his writing style.

Told in the form of a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read, the prose is exquisitely beautiful. Combined with the way the paragraphs and chapters are structured, it sometimes felt like I was reading a poem that spanned the entire length of the book.

今回は、オーシャン・ヴオンさんの小説『On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous』について。

正直なところ、この本を読んでどう感じたのか、自分でもまだよく分かっていません。すぐに心を掴まれたかというとそうでもなく、かといってハズレだったわけでもなく、ただ言葉にしきれない断片的な思考や感情が多すぎて、まだ自分の中で処理している最中です。

本の内容そのものについてうまく語れない一方で、一つ確実に言えるのは、スタイルがとてもユニークだという事。主人公から、文字の読めない母親への手紙という形式で綴られるこの作品は、その美しい文章と構成も相まって、まるで本一冊分の長さの詩を読んでいるような気分にさせてくれました。

今回は、そんな整理しきれない読後の余韻を、ありのままにお話しします。

This book had been sitting on my "Want to Read" shelf for a whopping 10 years!

Written by David Nicholls, the author of "One Day", I had high hopes for "Us". But to be completely honest, it was overall a miss for me.

The story follows Doug, a husband whose wife asks for a divorce just before their family holiday - a "Grand Tour" of Europe. While the premise is intriguing, I found the three main characters insufferable in their own unique ways.

In this episode, I vent a little about why I couldn't connect with them and how the long-awaited father-son conversation lacked the realness and substance I was hoping for.

「読みたい本リスト」になんと10年も眠っていたデヴィッド・ニコルズさんの『Us』。

映画『ワン・デイ』の原作者ということもあり、すごく期待して読んだのですが…正直、私にはあまりハマりませんでした。

約25年連れ添った妻から突然離婚を切り出され、気まずい空気のまま家族でヨーロッパを巡る「グランド・ツアー」に出発する物語。メインキャラクター3人がそれぞれ別のベクトルでイライラさせてきます…。

重要なシーンでもリアルさや「中身（substance）」が感じられず、少しガッカリしてしまったという本音をありのままに語ります。

皆さんは、何年も読むのを楽しみにしていたのにキャラクターに感情移入できなかった経験はありますか？

In today's episode, I’m talking about "Loop of the Cord" by Akira Ogidou - I don't usually read mysteries, but this one really caught my eye.

It’s set in Ignorabimus, a country where history and language have been completely erased, and follows the investigation of a mysterious illness spreading among teenagers.

In this episode, I reflect on a concept from the story called "Idioms of Distress" as well as why this book made me so glad to read a physical paper copy.

Plus, I share a wild coincidence regarding a particular theme and the book I just finished reading right before this one.

舞台は、疫病禍を経て、過去の歴史や言葉が丸ごと抹消された国「イグノラビムス」。そこで子供たちの間で同時多発的に起きている謎の病気を追う長編ミステリーです。

普段ミステリーを読まない私がなぜか惹かれて手に取ったこの本。

読んでみて改めて感じた「紙の本ならではの良さ」や、作中で知った「苦悩のイディオム」という概念について、語っています。

後半では、直前に読んでいた川上未映子さんの『夏物語』とこの本が「あるテーマ」でまさかのシンクロを起こしていたと知った、驚きの体験にも触れています。

大学生の頃に出会って以来、私の人生に寄り添い続けているオールタイム・ベストの一冊です。

今回は、物語の背景にある移民家族の葛藤や、第二部の主人公カウシクの旅を通して感じた「根を下ろすこと」の難しさについてお話しします。

私自身がヨーロッパで感じた「常に外国人として見られる重み」と、逆にカリフォルニアで感じた「自分を説明しなくていい安心感」との間で揺れ動いた正直な気持ちを、そのまま言葉にしてみました。

"I wish I’d never been born."

Following up on Heaven, I’m diving into Mieko Kawakami’s "Breasts and Eggs", a book named one of the best novels of the year by TIME and The New York Times.

I was particularly moved by the second half of the story, where the protagonist, Natsuko, confronts the complex ethics of choosing to become a mother on her own.

From the dilemma of bringing a life into this world to the vivid, bittersweet atmosphere of Osaka, I’m sharing the thoughts that have been spinning in my head ever since.
