LittleTalks is a project which aids communication between children and their loved ones in prison.

This week I’m talking to Emily Kennedy, Emily did her degree in Social Science in UCC and wrote her paper entitled, “Trending #Repealthe8th – An Exploration of the Limitations and Opportunities of Digital Feminist Activism” in 2019.

This paper looks at online activism and uses the Repeal the 8th campaign of 2018 as a case study. Specifically Emily is looking at online Feminist Activism, and also gives a fascinating introduction on the context of women’s autonomy and rights in Ireland.

We talk about the history of abortion rights in Ireland, the significance of the referendum in 2018, online movements; their efficacy and downfalls, online addiction and lots more! As my FINAL episode of Season 1 of Paper Radio, this episode really packs a lot in and I hope you enjoy!

This week I’m talking to James McElearney. James did a BA in Economic Politics and Law in DCU.

He wrote his paper this year entitled , “The Politics of the Irish Constitution: An obstacle to Irish Unity?”.

His very detailed paper outlines the question of northern partition as it was written into Ireland’s first constitution in 1937 and the developments in constitutional politics since then. James who is a beacon of knowledge on the subject talks me through these details all the way up to Brexit which we are still dealing with now. Hope you enjoy!

This week I’m talking to Luke Gibbons. Luke did his Bachelor of Laws in Trinity College Dublin and wrote his paper in 2019 entitled “Corporate Criminal Liability for Environmental Wrongs”.

This paper is so important and outlines the problems when it comes to punishing corporations criminally for committing wrongs on the environment. Luke explains the issues that arise bringing the corporations to court in the first place, how the legal system has yet to catch up and find a way of finding corporations liable, and how difficult it is to outline proper sanctions too. This conversation was so fascinating !

This week I am talking to Johannah Lordan. Johannah did her degree in Visual Communications in IADT. She wrote her paper in 2018 entitled “Low Price but not at any price. Ikea’s engagement with social and environmental issues.” We talk about how Ikea used Swedish design principles to bring good and affordable design to the world, IKEA's sustainability branding and we also question whether its even possible to be a global corporation and also be sustainable.

This week I’m talking to Anna Miskelly.  Anna did her degree in Civil Law & Society in DCU. She wrote her paper this year entitled “Judicial Formalism versus Institutionalism: The Case of Judicial Enforceable Socio-Economic Rights in Ireland”. This paper looks at how Judges treat cases which may deal with Socio-economic rights in Ireland. Can a judge enforce these rights? How are they laid out in our constitution? What kind of ideologies do judges form their decision processes with? What are socio-economic rights?

This week I’m talking to Calum Fabb. Callum wrote his paper in 2019 entitled “Investigating the effect of semantic relatedness on affective priming in multilingual individuals.”

Calum was the regional winner for Ireland under the linguistics category with this paper at the Undergraduate awards in 2019. Calum studied French and Hispanic Studies at TCD and is currently taking a Master’s there too.

Calum’s paper deals with the mind and how we process language, but specifically deals with multilingualism. We also talk about gender bias in research in general as well as the lack of research in multilingualism, and kind of the limitations of certain fields of research more generally.
