  • Allison Au – New Album “Migrations”

    Allison Au‘s new record Migrations is a suite of music that is an homage migrants.  Commissioned by the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2019, inspired by the stories of her grandparents from Eastern Europe and from Asia, Allison has created an epic musical poem which is comprised of her original compositions, combined with poetry by celebrated poets from a number of backgrounds and traditions including Emma LaRocque, Ruth Padel, Rae Marie Taylor, Duncan Mercredi, Chief Dan George, Langston Hughes and Wanda Coleman.

    Allison’s principal instrument is the saxophone, but she composes using primarily her voice.  The music is emotional and up-lifting. The ensemble features the Allison Au Quartet – Todd Pentney (piano), Jon Maharaj (bass) and Fabio Ragnelli (drums) – alongside an expanded instrumentation that includes Michael Davidson (vibraphone), Aline Homzy (violin), Jeremy Potts (violin), Catherine Gray (viola), Amahl Arulanandam (cello) and guest vocalist Laila Biali.

    Allison tells us about how this piece of work was commissioned, her process composing, and working with the other players through the pandemic, to finally recording and releasing the record.

  • George Mann – New Album “This Chain”

    George Mann returns to Paradigms fresh off an Australian tour, to share his new record This Chain, a collection of original songs and a few songs written by treasured friends.

    George has been involved with the labor movement and playing folk music for many years. He plays over 200 gigs a year, many in Veteran’s Homes and Homes for the elderly.

    The new record reunites George with longtime friends Michael Wellen on drums, Doug Robinson on bass and vocals, Rich DePaolo on guitars and vocals, Mary Bentley vocals, Molly MacMillan on keyboards, and Martin Confurius on double bass, as well as  Elbonee “SingTrece” Stevenson on vocals, and Tim Ball on violin.

  • Muriel Mwamba – New Record “Lesa Alomfwa”

    Muriel Mwamba is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Zambia. Her new record Lesa Alomfwa is a celebration of her faith and determination. Years in the making, with songs inspired by her life experiences, this album is Muriel’s first album, with hopefully more to come! Bringing together African, Brazilian and Jazz musical colors, this music can move you from the inside out.

    This record is one person’s inspired labor of love, created over decades. Many people have a project or projects they work on over long periods of time. Fed by inspiration, projects can come to fruition.

  • Gino Jevdjevic & Darek Mazzone – Kultur Shock New Album “Acoustic Live”

    Gino Jevdjevic is a musician from Bosnia whose band is Kultur Shock. Darek Mazzone is from Poland,, and his record label is Old Age Recording Co. They are long time friends and colleagues, and together they have just produced a new Kultur Shock album Acoustic Live.

    Kultur Shock has been making music for decades and has many albums.  They are a punk band, so this acoustic record is something different for the band, with old songs reworked and new material.

    Gino and Darek share their perspectives from their life experiences.  The discussion connects the music to politics to the human condition.

  • Yungchen Lhamo – New Album “One Drop of Kindness”

    Yungchen Lhamo is from Tibet. She has resided in the United States for 30 years. Yungchen has been celebrated on the international music scene since the mid 1990’s.  Recently she toured Australia with Peter Gabriel.

    Yungchen Lhamo’s seventh album is One Drop of Kindness, a song cycle of beautiful music which offers listeners a journey from wherever you are to a place of realization, and ability to experience more spaces of kindness, compassion, and courage.

    Proceeds from this record  benefit the One Drop of Kindness Foundation.  “Through carefully selected projects, the foundation seeks to bring specific material support and healing inspiration to distressed communities both within the U.S. and in other countries–focusing on direct aid, charitable giving and community outreach.” – One Drop of Kindness Foundation

    Baruch and Yungchen discussed how the human mind and emotions work.  Yungchen shares some of what she has learned from the traditions of practice handed down for generations in her family.

    Carrie Newcomer‘s album A Great Wild Mercy is a heartwarming foray into a world of possibilities and hope, while acknowledging the challenges of life.  The painful aspects of reality are not candy-coated in Newcomer’s stories, but beauty and aliveness are celebrated. The use of imagery and sense memory in her songs is crafted beautifully.

    Welcomed back to Paradigms after 7 years, the conversation with Carrie is a heartfelt exchange. The themes of presence, kindness, hope and mercy, run through the songs, a perfect way to start the new year. Carrie performs the title track.

  • Dr. Alexis Peterson, Jon Kelley – Traumatic Brain Injury

    During the holiday season people get new toys, engage in winter sports, and party; all activities which can lead to injury.  This episode is intended to help people understand and prevent Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), a sort of “TBI 101.”

    Dr. Alexis Peterson works at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a researcher. She is currently working on the issue of TBI. Dr. Peterson gives us a basic tutorial in TBI, what it is, who gets it and how, what to do about it and what to expect regarding treatment and recovery.

    Jon Kelley is a former Navy Corpsman who shares some of his personal story about TBI in his life.

  • Oz Noy – New Record “Triple Play”

    Oz Noy moved to New York City as a child, and now he’s a working musician, touring and recording.  He plays Jazz Guitar with a distinctly bluesy flavor. The Oz Noy Trio includes Dennis Chambers on drums and Jimmy Haslip on bass. Their new album Triple Play is really good music.

    Oz shares some of his story and his process.  He’s a very down to Earth pragmatic fellow, and music is what he does, with commitment and enthusiasm. He would bring those qualities to anything, but it so happens Oz found music and that set his path.

    World Beyond War is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending war and violence.  Marc Eliot Stein first volunteered for World Beyond War in 2017 and has since become the Technology Director, managing websites, podcast and other technological aspects of promoting this mission. The organization provides anti-war organizing, workshops, and the podcast World Beyond War.

    The conversation between Marc and Baruch examines some of the history of human warfare, how war has developed into a large scale profit-making enterprise, beliefs about the inevitability of war, and what people can do to be Peacemakers.
