Dan Storper, founder of Putumayo World Music, joins Baruch to talk about the new Putumayo record which he co-curated with Linda Ronstadt. The album, Feels Like Home, is a collection of songs from Ronstadt’s life, performed by a variety of artists, which is the companion album to Linda Ronstadt’s new book of the same name.

Dan tells us about how this record came to be, how the songs were chosen, and what they mean to Linda.

Roy T. Anderson returns to Paradigms to talk about his most recent documentary film project African Redemption: The Life and Legacy of Marcus Garvey. Roy was on the show in 2015 talking about his film Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess.

Roy T. Anderson is an award winning stuntman, appearing in over 200 films.  He also makes documentaries about significant figures in the history of Africans and those with African ancestry, bringing out stories most people are not familiar with. The technique of Roy’s documentaries is very accessible, utilizing archival material where possible, and actors portraying iconic moments. His films are riveting.

Marcus Garvey was a controversial figure in the early 20th Century, whose intentions to level the playing field for Africans and all black people, were viewed as threatening to the status quo, and were thus vilified.  In this film we get to hear from Marcus Garvey in his own words, and the words of people who knew him, as we learn about his story, his experiences, his life.

Ernesto Cervini is a drummer and composer who has just composed and produced a new record called Joy.  The music is inspired by a series of mystery books featuring Chief Inspector Gamache written by Louise Penny.  Amy Cervini, Ernesto’s sister and frequent musical collaborator, worked closely with Ernesto on this record.  Both Ernesto and Amy join Baruch for a spirited conversation about this music, sibling co-creativity, and more.

The music on this record is inspired by people and places from Louise Penny’s books, but even if you haven’t read the books the music is very enjoyable, upbeat, even amusing at times.  The production and musicianship is excellent, and let’s mention that the “cast and crew” on this album are all Canadians.

Kabir Sehgal, and brothers Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, have come together to create a new record Sand And Foam: Music Inspired by Kahlil Gibran. All three musicians are accomplished in their own right. Together, with guest musicians Claudia Acuna on vocals, Tivon Pennicott on sax, Caliph rapping, Oran Etkins on saxophone, Malini Aswathi on vocals, and Sudha Raghunanthan also on vocals, they have synergized to create a brilliant musical entrée to the poet Kahlil Gibran.

The conversation centers around Gibran’s message, and how it has been brought to music in this new record.

As a special treat, Baruch shares an excerpt from the audiobook of The Prophet he’s been working on with Starhawk and Dennis Lind-Beery.
