Elexa Dawson has released a new song Speak Again as a follow-up to her debut album Music is Medicine.  Elexa is a songwriter and performing artist who is inspired by her life experience and her relationship with the land.  Her latest song offers perspective on how we communicate and how our relationship with the land and with each other informs our communication.

Elexa is currently embarking on the journey of creating a community space that will bring together sustainable agriculture, people, and the arts. Active with Folk Alliance International, Elexa’s commitment to community is one of her inspirations.

Aimée Allen grew up listening to jazz and singing.  As a young adult Aimée made her way to Paris to study music, and it is there she started performing professionally. Aimée has since traveled the world bringing her own stylings to well known standards, and performing her original songs.

Love and the Catalyst, Aimée’s fifth record, is a combination of a few covers and mostly original songs written by Aimée, performed with Aimée’s band: Toru Dodo on piano, François Moutin on bass, Kush Abadey on drums, with guests Tony Romano and Noah Allen, on guitar and trumpet respectively.

Jeff Rupert returns to Paradigms after 5 years to share about his new record with The Jazz Professors inspired by Pablo Picasso called Blues & Cubes.

The Jazz Professors are all accomplished artists who also teach.  They are Jeff Rupert on saxophone, Dan Miller on trumpet, Per Danielsson on piano, Bobby Koelble on guitar, Richard Drexler on  bass, and Marty Morell on percussion.  Sadly Dan Miller recently passed away.

The music is inspired by Picasso’s style and revolutionary creativity. The conversation between Jeff & Baruch touches on issues of creativity and human development, as well as the specific pieces on this album.

Roy T. Anderson returns to Paradigms to talk about his most recent documentary film project African Redemption: The Life and Legacy of Marcus Garvey. Roy was on the show in 2015 talking about his film Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess.

Roy T. Anderson is an award winning stuntman, appearing in over 200 films.  He also makes documentaries about significant figures in the history of Africans and those with African ancestry, bringing out stories most people are not familiar with. The technique of Roy’s documentaries is very accessible, utilizing archival material where possible, and actors portraying iconic moments. His films are riveting.

Marcus Garvey was a controversial figure in the early 20th Century, whose intentions to level the playing field for Africans and all black people, were viewed as threatening to the status quo, and were thus vilified.  In this film we get to hear from Marcus Garvey in his own words, and the words of people who knew him, as we learn about his story, his experiences, his life.

Ernesto Cervini is a drummer and composer who has just composed and produced a new record called Joy.  The music is inspired by a series of mystery books featuring Chief Inspector Gamache written by Louise Penny.  Amy Cervini, Ernesto’s sister and frequent musical collaborator, worked closely with Ernesto on this record.  Both Ernesto and Amy join Baruch for a spirited conversation about this music, sibling co-creativity, and more.

The music on this record is inspired by people and places from Louise Penny’s books, but even if you haven’t read the books the music is very enjoyable, upbeat, even amusing at times.  The production and musicianship is excellent, and let’s mention that the “cast and crew” on this album are all Canadians.

Playing For Change is all about inspiring people to connect through music. Founded by Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, the organization brings musicians together from around the world.  Money raised goes towards building schools and getting instruments into the hands of young people.
