  • Dr. Ken Friedman and Dr. David Maughan – ME/CFS and Long Haul Covid Similarities and Ramifications

Dr.  Ken Friedman, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Stratford, NJ.

Dr. David Maughan, Ph.D. is a Research Professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington, VT. who has been on Paradigms before.

Drs. Friedman and Maughan describe how ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) has impacted their families, and then they explain similarities between ME/CFS and Long Covid, both falling under the newly minted category PAPIS (Post Active Phase of InfectionSyndromes) which also includes Chronic Lyme Disease. Baruch and the Doctors discuss both genetic and environmental influences on immune response.

The conversation goes to questions about how treatment options for ME/CFS may have implications for Long Covid. The discussion is somewhat technical but Friedman and Maughan break it down for us.

  • Jake Dailey – Regenerative Forest Management “Rake Force”

Jake Dailey has started Rake Force, “Mobile response team for biomass reclamation and carbon negative conservation services. We use regenerative and permaculture strategies to restore ecosystems and individuals.” – rakeforce.us

Jake describes how Rake Force works with goats to reduce flammable biomass in the forest.  Jake explains how the principles of Permaculture are served through this project, including the regenerative aspects of this work for Veterans, who benefit from being in the forest, and as the program grows, eventually being able to derive a livable wage from the work.

Rake Force is a scalable project, modeled after the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) that could make a significant difference for the fire-imperiled Western US, and if properly supported could do so quickly.

  • Heather Sarona – New Record “Head Above Water”

Heather Sarona has released Head Above Water, 9 tracks of original music, her first full album. The songs are all very personal, examining relationship as it ends, as it begins, as it endures, perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Heather is one of those people who started playing music very early in life, and for whom music has always been a thread throughout their life.  We get into that in the interview.

This music is bluegrass with a contemporary sensibility.  The musicianship is really good, and the songs themselves tell a universally human story.

  • Small Island, Big Song – New Album “Our Island”

Small Island, Big Song is a multimedia project spanning continents, involving dozens of indigenous people from the region, celebrating the Pacific and Indian Oceans and raising awareness as to the peril Earth’s oceans currently face from pollution, and the effects from the changing climate.

The human world has become increasingly mechanized and specialized.  The view of the oceans as places of mystery to be honored, has been lost not completely but nearly so. Oceans are viewed largely as commodities.  Thinking of things in terms of dollars and cents makes it easier to shut off one’s caring.

As the oceans die, and this from human activity make no mistake, all life on Earth is threatened.  Life forms that need oxygen are dependent on the oceans, for they produce most of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere.

Babobao Chen and Tim Cole, Producers, join Baruch for a conversation about the project, the musicians, the music videos and the film.  Small Island, Big Song is touring the United States through April, then heading to Italy.

The music we hear during this episode is from the new record Small Island, Big Song – Our Island.

  • Day Schildkret – New Book “Hello, Goodbye”

Day Schildkret is known for his creative exploration Morning Altars. Day has a new book out Hello, Goodbye – 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change. Day describes it as a “cookbook” for making rituals to return to one’s self as one navigates the meaningful events of one’s life.

Day and Baruch talk about the book, what’s in it, and what it has to offer to people in the realm of pausing, being present, and fully experiencing the changes and milestones of our lives. Day Schildkret offers wisdom and thoughtful ideas in the conversation as he does in the book. Well worth a listen.

  • Simon Webster – Percussionist Extraordinaire

Simon Webster has been playing music since he was a child, first the violin, then, as a teenager, he discovered drums, and that was that.

Simon has played with World Music artists and traveled the world, studying local percussion styles as he travels. He has lived in Morocco, France, and the UK.

In 2020 Simon released the album Threads, a collection of songs recorded over the previous few years. Simon’s most recent project is Sharka with Chaka Chouka (Bernard O’Neill, Haji Mike and Mouna Eddrou). Check out the percussion and drum loops Simon has created.

  • The Terry Family Band – New Record “Hometown Tragedies”

The Terry Family Band – Jim, Graham and Clark, have released a record Hometown Tragedies; a dozen songs about painful personal, national and human tragedies, that are surprisingly uplifting.

The Terry Family resides in Napa, California, where they have been known as part of the local music scene for decades.  This, though, is their first record. Jim has “come into his own” as a songwriter and just keeps cranking out these beautiful meaningful songs.  The musicianship is excellent, same with the production.

This record, mostly written and recorded during lockdown, is inspiring artistically, but more important it inspires human decency and kindness.

  • Bernard O’Neill with Chaka Chouka – New Music “Sharka”

Bernard O’Neill returns to Paradigms to share a new collaboration, Sharka with Chaka Chouka (Simon Webster, Haji Mike and Mouna Eddrou), a collection of Mediterranean rhythms and powerful poetry.  This project was created during lockdown, and reflects very much the events of our times.

The album happened by accident, with Simon creating rhythm tracks which he shared with Bernard who shared with Haji Mike, and then Mouna added her amazing vocals.  A lockdown collaboration resulting in this powerful music.

Bernard lives in rural France and shares with Baruch how people have been responding to Covid by prioritizing the well-being of the group, in stark contrast to what we see in the US where there are many people who do NOT prioritize the common good.

    Great music and stimulating conversation!

  • Gordie Tentrees – New Record “Mean Old World”

Gordie Tentrees has just released his eighth album Mean Old World, a collection of songs about Gordie’s real life experiences, his favorite song-writing topic.

Living in the Yukon in Canada, where music is a part of the social fabric, Gordie and three of his friends, Bob & Patrick Hamilton, and Jaxon Haldane, have made a record with poignant lyrics, rockin’ bluesy bluegrassy tunes, all presented in  very relatable cool sounding songs.

Gordie is one of those people who faces challenges directly, with determination.  His approach to writing songs, like his approach to life, is to share his experiences and learning for the intended benefit of those around him.

The conversation spans the making of this record, the efforts in Canada to heal the ill treatment of indigenous people, and being a foster parent.

  • Alison Perry, Founder of the Central Oregon Veterans Ranch

In 2012 Alison Perry envisioned Central Oregon Veteran’s Ranch to be “a working ranch that restores purpose and spirit to veterans of all ages.”  Nine years later the ranch exists just north of Bend in Central Oregon; 19 acres of homestead and land where veterans are working together, practicing regenerative agriculture in the context of non-residential community.

Alison returns to Paradigms after 6 years to share the ongoing progress occurring at the ranch, including support groups for veterans and their families, the construction of a greenhouse leading to a hydroponics business supplying fresh produce to local establishments, and the work in progress to create an Adult Foster Home where veterans will provide end of life care for other veterans.

The community model being developed and implemented at COVR can be replicated anywhere because it is based in very simple principles of cooperation, service, and caring. Alison describes what’s happening and how this inspiration is contagious.

Music by: Jorma Kaukonen, Old Crow Medicine Show, Tracy Chapman, George Harrison, This Frontier Needs Heroes, and Lindsey Buckingham & Little Big Town.
