We review the 25th Annual Trauma Care Conference 2022 and discuss the Paramedic Programme which is organised in conjunction with the College of Paramedics and the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) programme. The Trauma Care Conference is an established part of the UK conference scene. They attract a broad spectrum of distinguished speakers, from across a wide range of specialities and professions, providing a unique blend of subjects. This diverse mix makes the Trauma Care Conference a unique opportunity for everyone involved in the care of the trauma victim to learn together, and share their knowledge and experience. The conference talks were filmed and are available on the Trauma Care website for a fee.  

Trauma Care are hosting three regional conferences next year in lieu of their annual conference. They are hosting a regional conference in Birmingham on the 5th and 6th March 2023 at the National Conference Centre. They are hosting a regional conference in Manchester on the 5th and 6th June 2023 location TBC. They are hosting a regional conference in Bristol in September 2023 with dates and location TBC.

Steve Bell joined the ambulance service in 2000 and became a registered paramedic in 2003 after working as an EMT. In 2010 he was appointed amongst the first cohort of Advanced Paramedics in his Trust and in the country. In 2015 Steve joined HEMS, working for North West Air Ambulance as a HEMS Paramedic.

In 2018 Steve was appointed as the Consultant Paramedic in the Medical Directorate within NWAS. He was also appointed to the role of Consultant HEMS Paramedic with NWAA in 2018.

Steve maintains an active portfolio of clinical work, principally within the HEMS environment and working as part of the enhanced critical care team in the region. Steve leads research and development within NWAS, guiding the direction of pre-hospital research studies.

In this episode, we discuss the Consultant Paramedic role and gain insight into Steve’s years of experience working for the Ambulance Service.

In this episode we will discuss Jamie's journey into critical care and becoming a high-performing HEMS paramedic. We gain the insight into Jamie's experience of working within the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and discuss Jamie's new innovative project as the jet suit paramedic. We will dive into Jamie's mind-set and philosophy and explore how an "ordinary" Geordie lad ended up "flying high" in the hills of Cumbria.

Jake Jones is a paramedic and author of Can You Hear Me?: An NHS Paramedic's Encounters with Life and Death, published in 2020. The fast-paced memoir was an instant success, with glowing reviews from newspapers and magazines including the Guardian and the Times Literary Supplement, and selection for the Richard and Judy book club.

In this episode we discuss the two parts of Jake's career: paramedic and writer. We delve into the processes of becoming inspired, writing a memoir, and navigating the complex moral issues of confidentiality and exploitation of patients.

In this episode we discuss Ollie’s journey through the military and into paramedicine and becoming a high performing search and rescue winch paramedic. We will gain the insight into Ollie’s experience gained within the Royal Air Force, his role as a search and rescue winch paramedic and discuss Ollie’s biking and film-making adventures and his expeditions. We explore Ollie’s philosophy and why Ollie chose the path “less ridden”.

In this episode we speak to US-based paramedic Coco Tang. Over the last ten years, Coco has led humanitarian missions in Sierra Leona, Nepal, Greece, Haiti and Bangladesh. She has conducted training and assessments in Ghana, Myanmar, Haiti, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mexico. Coco also has experience of conflicts, having provided medical aid in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukraine. 

We discuss what it's like to to work in this sector - the level of responsibility, the highlights and the difficult moments. Coco shares her advice for those of us with an interest in humanitarian missions.

Coco is currently on the board of directors of two non-governmental organisations (NGOs): Global Response Management (global-response.org) and Global Outreach Doctors (globaloutreachdoctors.org). 

In February 2022 Rob Stanfield took time off from working as an NQP with SWAST to complete a phenomenal 630 mile trek in 25 days. In doing so he raised over £8000 for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. In this episode we chat to Rob about his career and his get-up-and-go philosophy!
