  • Michael Albert on MIT, Secret Societies, and Powerful Institutions
Michael Albert is an American economist, speaker, writer, and political critic. Since the late 1970s, he has published books, articles, and other contributions on a wide array of subjects. He is known for helping to develop the socioeconomic theory of participatory economics. In 1965, Albert was studying physics at MIT, where Albert met long-time friend and collaborator, Noam Chomsky. Albert publicly objected to the US military's funding of the university. This, along with the civil rights movement, led Albert to become politically active. He became a member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and opposed the Vietnam War. He was expelled from MIT, in January 1970, for disruptive behaviour, although he claimed the charges were 'cooked-up'. Albert founded South End Press in 1977 along with Lydia Sargent and Juliet Schor, among others. In 1987, Albert founded Zeta Magazine with Sargent. The magazine focused on libertarian and anarchist socialist thought. It was renamed Z Magazine in 1989. In 1990–91, Albert and Robin Hahnel worked on outlining their ideas around participatory economics. They published 'Looking Forward' and 'The Political Economy of Participatory Economics,' with the latter including an economic model of the system. By 1995, the organization Z Magazine had branched out providing online content and media training. Along with the magazine the ventures are collectively known as Z Communications. In 2003, 'Parecon: Life After Capitalism' was published further outlining participatory economics in a more accessible, less academic format. The book was translated into 20 languages. Albert was a founding member of the International Organization for a Participatory Society, in 2012. Sean Michael Wilson created a comic book based on Albert and his ideas in 2013. His latest book, 'Practical Utopia: Strategies for a Desirable Society,' was published in 2017. Albert is the co-founder of 'C20,' a group of activists, scholars, and writers from around the world who write under the pseudonym, 'Collective 20.'

  • Leslie Cagan on the 1960s, Feminism, and Antiwar Activism | Part I
Leslie Sue Cagan was born in 1947 to a Jewish couple in the Bronx, New York. Her grandmother, a seamstress, was a founding member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union, which was known for its far-left politics. In 1964 Cagan enrolled at New York University (NYU), where she joined an activist group in solidarity with SNCC [Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee] and SDS [Students for a Democratic Society]. In 1966 she became involved in the antiwar movement. Next, Cagan started to explore a number of additional activist causes—specifically, the anti-nuclear, LGBT rights, and feminist movements, which took her around the world, from Cuba to Bulgaria. In 2000, Cagan served as a member of the Pacifica Foundation’s board of directors. In 2001 she was elected chair of the Foundation’s interim board of directors. And in 2002 she became co-chair of the newly formed anti-war coalition United For Peace and Justice (UFPJ), a post she would hold until 2008. In 2004 Cagan co-founded — along with Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin — the organization Iraq Occupation Watch, whose mission was to encourage widespread desertion by 'conscientious objectors' in the U.S. military. In 2011 Cagan was the coordinator of The Audacity of Hope, an American boat (named after Barack Obama‘s 2006 memoir) that was scheduled to participate in a Free Gaza Movement flotilla in late June of that year. Cagan is a member of the New York Committee to Free the Cuban Five, a group of individuals convicted in 2001 by a U.S. jury for their participation in a brutal Castro spy ring and now serving time in American prisons. Both Leslie and Vince are members of the 'Collective No. 20' writing project.

  • Angel Smith on Culture, Black Lives Matter, and The Esoteric Collective
Angel is a multimedia artist and an IDA fellow at Stanford University. She seeks to create Art that honors her ancestors (the past) as well as what kind of ancestor she would like to be (the future). And while all these are important in her practice, her Art is also deeply rooted in the Now, for her own sake, as a way to build a universe of truths that are often not talked about, as she creates from a lens of healing. Angel’s initial approach to artistic practice was through journaling because it was her only way of expressing frustrations with the world and her appreciation of the world. First a writer, then a musician and a poet, today she truly is a brilliant and wise multimedia artist. Angel is a graduate of Chesterton High School.
