  • Therapists Really Do Have Big Hearts
As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counsellor hear Alexia Muniz Catan talk about her journey recognizing a gap in her community and creating a program for her not-for-profit in order to meet the need. Alexia attended, onsite at the family’s residence for family support. She provided care for families with intellectual disabilities as well as autistic individuals in her local counties. This then had her moving towards online private practice. Alexia and Julie both work with kids as young as 5 years old, they discuss online practice and their thoughts around what age is appropriate to work with youth online and what online practice would look like with a younger population as online therapy practice emerges.
Alexia practices mostly using Solution-Focused therapy; she looks at the basis of what is comfortable for the client when processing what is going on to help them transition to change. Asking clients about what they did or didn’t like in past therapy experiences and how there is value in knowing, as your therapist, what you didn’t like. A great discussion ensues around the importance of continuing to work with your therapist during times you might feel uncomfortable and assessing if this is a regular pattern in your life that therapy can help with.

  • It Takes a Whole Village: How to Engage With Professionals and Others
In this last episode in the four part series ‘Parenting the Restorative Way’ with Rick Kelly he and I talk about how parents and caregivers can be challenged to communicate with professionals involved with their child. Rick explains how he maps out all the responsibilities parents have and how parents are their child’s village (in relation to ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’) and how parents are managing multiple roles at one time. Recognizing and learning how to be your child’s best advocate while interacting in settings where professionals see themselves as experts can be intimidating, frustrating and negatively impactful.

  • Unpacking Eating Disorders – Parents, What Can You Do?
In the last of our 5 part series on Unpacking Eating Disorders Sarah Terwilligar
discusses parental self-reflection and the importance of being healthy and seeking one’s own support. Supporting a loved one struggling with eating and/or an eating disorder can be really difficult. Noticing how and what you say verbally and non-verbally has an impact on the child/youth in your environment and this includes things like dieting. Children and teens should not be dieting and reflecting on your desire to “diet” and all that comes with this has an impact. Increasing your awareness about what is difficult for the child or youth, especially around family dinners, special holidays, celebrations and traditions or going shopping or out for dinner as a family is key as well.

  • Parenting With Growth In Mind: How to Talk to Kids and Support Resilience
This is the third of a four part series with Rick Kelly. Today we carry on the conversation related to Parenting the Restorative Way. Rick speaks about the key role of relationships is to be intentional and learn about a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset and why focusing on accomplishments rather than effort is not helpful in the bigger picture.

Some youth are challenged with transitional points in their development i.e. graduating high school where they may have been able to achieve many things but lack a sense of ability about how they could do what they did. Unfortunately this lagging can become a crisis situation for the individual as well as the family as it can happen very quickly.
