Inclusive Education Project (IEP) Podcast

Parentless P.E. with Joe Reed [IEP 132]

Listen Later

In the state of California, kids need to be active in Physical Education for 110 minutes each week. In this pandemic, most kids are not getting anywhere close to that. On today’s show, Amanda and Vickie welcome Joe Reed, a health trainer who saw a need and reached out with a solution.

Don’t miss Joe’s inspiring story of how he went from wheelchair to personal health trainer, from retiring with a disability to overcoming it and being healthier than ever.

Joe Reed is the owner and founder of Trainouttapain.com. He’s a health coach and a strength coach who specializes in helping people with fibromyalgia. Joe also leads live Zoom classes each week to help meet the need of students in need of physical activity.

Joe is a former school district warehouse supervisor.

Show Highlights:

  • Joe shares his personal story of how he went from being in a wheelchair five years ago to being a health trainer today.
  • As much as Joe enjoys working with professional athletes, his passion is working with helping those who need it the most.
  • He is two years symptom-free and more healthy than he’s been in his whole life.
  • Joe visited more than 30 doctors during his illness.
  • Joe adopted from his mentor the philosophy of the 4 M’s and made it his own:
    • Move yourself
    • more often in
    • more ways, in
    • more environments than you currently are now.

  • Kids aren’t currently getting physical education and Joe addresses the need for them to move, especially during this time.
  • Seeing a need, Joe reached out to teachers to find out the California state standard for P.E. Once he researched this, he decided to offer a solution and started a live Zoom class three days a week with three different levels:
    • Kindergarten through 3rd grade
    • 4th through 6th grade
    • Special needs class

  • Joe describes his class, which is called “Parentless P.E.”.
  • There’s only one piece of equipment required for class, and that is a ball. If you don’t have a ball, he will teach you how to make a sock ball.
  • The special needs class helps develop coordination and confidence.
  • Classes are interactive and educational, as well.
