The Kingdom has Arrived | Passage: Mark 1:14-20 | In this passage we see that Jesus identifies himself as the King of the kingdom that God's going to reestablish. He is the King who is trustworthy, who won't crush his people in tyranny, but will rescue them in his love and give them life as they were meant to have. Outline: 1) Jesus Brings in the Kingdom (vs. 14-15). (i) Kingdom describes God's reign over his people and his world. (ii) Kingdom access is given to those who repent and believe in the gospel. 2) Jesus Opens up the Kingdom (vs. 16-20). He does so with (i) a call to come and follow him and (ii) a call to leave everything for him. |

The Beginning of the Story | Passage: Mark 1:1-13 | It's a story brimming with good news as this is what Mark's communicating with the phrase "gospel". This is not good advice about how to live, but rather good news about a person, Jesus Christ. Outline: 1) John is the Last of the Old Voices (vs. 1-8). He is a (i) promised prophet, (ii) a powerful preacher, and (iii) a preparer for Jesus. 2) Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (vs. -13). He (i) receives God's approval and (ii) resists Satan's temptation. We have in Mark 1:1-13 the beginning of the story.

In these familiar verses we are reminded that we see the story of the Bible as we share together in the Lord's Supper. When we say that we "see" the Bible, we do so because God's ordinances, baptism and the Lord's Supper are the only two commanded dramas of Christian worship. As Ligon Duncan put it, "In baptism and the Lord's Supper we see with our eyes the promise of God."

To Remember Jesus' Sacrifice

-This will humble us

-This will delight us

To Recall Jesus' Return

-This meal is temporary

To Recognize the Church's Unity

-With those who've gone before us

-With those all around us

-With those yet to be included

- You were internally ravaged

- You were relationally isolated

Remember God's amazing change in your life (vs. 4-7)

- He saved you in love and kindness

- He mercifully moved toward you

- He changed you and is changing you

- He forever has made you his own

Remember that God's ways are good (vs. 8)

- To do good and be good is profitable for you and for others
