Bamidbor


דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה אֶפְרַיִם לְצִבְאֹתָם יָמָּה

The legions under the division of the camp of Ephraim were to the west.


וְעָלָיו מַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה

Next to him, the tribe of Manasseh.


(Bamidbar, 2:18 and 20)


There is a fascinating piece in the Talmud, in which these verses play a foundational part. The discussion centers around the Shulchan in the Beis Hamikdash and the requirement to place an offering of frankincense on it each week.


Abba Shaul says: There, in the space between the two arrangements (of the Shulchan), the priests would place the two bowls of frankincense that accompany the shewbread. The Sages said to him: But isn’t it already stated: “And you shall place pure frankincense upon [al] each arrangement, that it may be for the bread as a memorial part, an offering made by fire to the Lord”? The verse indicates that the frankincense is placed upon the shewbread and not next to it. Abba Shaul said to the Sages in response: Isn’t it already stated: “And next to him [alav] shall be the tribe of Manasseh”? Just as the preposition “alav” in this verse means that the tribe of Manasseh pitched camp next to the tribe of Ephraim and not upon it, so too, the preposition “al” means that the frankincense was placed next to the arrangements of the shewbread.



Driving Questions:


The verse brought as proof from the camping arrangement of Ephraim and Menashe is the third of the four groups, with Yehuda’s camp and Reuven’s camp appearing beforehand. Why did Aba Shaul skip over those and specifically quote this one?

ביאור המשנה (מנחות פי״א משנה ה) אבא שאול אומר , על השולחן בין שני סדרי לחם הפנים , היו נותנים שני בזיכי לבונה שנאמר (אמור כד, ז) ״ונתת על המערכת לבונה״, על פירושו סמוך, ומביא ראי׳ מן הפסוק ועליו מטה מנשה, שחנו אצל וסמוך לשבט אפרים.
