Party Favorz

Party Favorz hasn't dropped a Peak Hour set since October so there was alot of ground to cover since then. I started from December and skipped November altogether because I knew there were a lot of releases (most not worthy as late year releases are seldom stellar) — certainly more songs than the usual 3 - 4 hour set.

I've also been getting into a lot of Breakbeat and Garage House lately but just couldn't make those tracks work in this mix so I had to throw them all out. After creating the first draft of the set on Monday, I waded through the mix to see what worked and what didn't. Then, I waited for new tracks to drop on Friday to ensure this set was timely. While this episode predominantly relies on Tech House and House Music, I managed to throw in a couple of Indie tracks I'm really digging that are floating under the radar in the larger DJ community. It's those kind of discoveries that sets Party Favorz apart from everyone else. We provide a literal reading of "digging in the crates."

In fact, curation accounts for half the amount of time that goes into making these sets. It's not just throwing in tracks that all the other DJs are spinning (even though there is a certain element to that) but discovering great songs that no one else is playing making these sets unique and one of a kind.

After all was said and done, I kept this set tight and just under 3 hours, which nowadays is a record for me. 'Bring the Noise' is all about the flow with lots of overlays to transition from one song to the next without ever knowing what hit you.

Party Favorz is back a day early to declare THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY! Of course that means it's time for some lip-smacking, booty shaking, funky disco house to kick your weekend off!

I'm fully aware that the weather sucks in 2/3 of the country as many of you are buried under ice and snow with freezing cold temperatures. Hopefully (if your power is still on) 'All Night Long' will help you thaw out.

I began compiling tracks for the next Disco House and Peak Hour series and had a lot of great songs that didn't quite fit into these categories. It was something I had been anticipating since Beatport expanded their genre categories to include Funky House, Jackin House (already a Traxsource staple), Melodic House & Techno, Organic House / Downtempo and Garage.

For the most part, the way they divide up the genres is meaningless. While some songs have a truly identifiable rhythm, most do not. When you add in Breaks / Breakbeat, Electronica, House, Indie Dance, Minimal and Deep Tech genres, there's not enough differentiating most songs. Some elements are identifiable allowing for categorization but most fall into a grey area.

The biggest benefit to adding in all these different genres is that it allows DJs to sample more sounds, while finding great music that in the past may have gone unnoticed. For that reason, I applaud Beatport (and to a greater extent JunoDownload) for providing better options for discovering new music.

What I am sure about is that many of these songs spread across different genres are simply excellent — even if they don't quite fit in to the Party Favorz category list. I pulled together all my favorite tracks and started mixing, while disgarding songs that I couldn't make work.

The end result is not the usual Lounge / Chill sets of the previous efforts but more like the earlier Deep Edition and Mixtape Sessions series Party Favorz was known for ten years ago.

'A Feeling' starts off very lowkey before picking up. There are some points where you might think the roof is on fire but everything quickly simmers down to a low boil.

To be certain, this is not like previous efforts so I want to ensure expectations are met. This is a darker journey but a much satisfying one that ends on a high and jubilant note.

One of the things you may notice about the Party Favorz Top Dance Songs series is that there are always a few songs that never appeared on previous sets from the year. In most instances, it's because we missed them or they never came across our radar. There are literally hundreds of new dance tracks released each week and it's inevitible that some great tunes will fall through the cracks. We work with to different DJ promotional sources (one for official remixes and the other for bootlegs and mashups), labels, DJs and buy anything from Beatport, Traxsource and Bandcamp not available through traditional means, while scouring SoundCloud looking anything worthwhile that's free from up and coming DJs. There's a lot that of research and work that goes into creating every single mix but we're not perfect.

This year's missed opportunities are "Gold" by Austin Millz & Aluna (I can't say enough about this song), "Sunshine" by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled & Amorphous (only because there weren't any official remixes released for this song other than the standard DJ edit, which was too slow) and "Please" the final release from Jessie Ware's freaking amazing 2020 album "What's Your Pleasure?" which was her best selling album in the UK to date. Ms. Ware transitioned from her typical moody heartwrenching work to a more uplifting Disco album several months after Dua Lipa released "Future Nostalgia" another album inspired by Disco, 80's Dance and House and was merely coincidental as she had been working on the album for two years. If you really love the FN, you're ears will get equally excited over WYP.

Finally, there's "Fire" by Nigerian singer Kah-lo who had previously worked with Riton on "Rinse and Repeat." That song did in fact come across our radar but without any extended edits or remixes, we never used it — something we deeply regret. After all, we had used Soffi Tukker's "Good Time Girl" just a year earlier that had no remixes at the time and also clocked in under 3 minutes. I see a very bright future for Kah-lo and hope that Epic promotes her work to the masses. You can purchase her EP "Arrival" here and it's available on all the streaming platforms as well.

Typically, Party Favorz takes a deep dive into our Top Dance Songs annual reviews by combining remixed pop hits (authorized or bootleg because of cultural significance) as well as club-worthy tracks and standard EDM fare that otherwise go unnoticed at radio but has a larger impact in its niche on streaming and YouTube. That being said, here are our Top 20 picks for the biggest dance tracks of the year (in no particular order):

The dance music scene didn't change too much from 2020 in that there was no groundbreaking sounds and Future House, Tech House and NuDisco continued to drill their throbbing beats into our collective conscience.

2021 was a year that a new crop of DJs broke through in a big way. Leading the pack is Chicago's John Summit whose deep house grooves have really broken through to the masses. Massive tracks like "Sun Came Up" (with Sofi Tukker), "Better Than This" (with Parachute Youth), "Human" (with Echoes) while still riding high on his 2020 hits "Deep End" and "Thin Line" (with Guz) and remixing several other notable artists has propelled his star into the stratosphere.

Another DJ whose on a similar trajectory is Brazil's Vintage Culture (Lukas Rafael Ruiz Hespanhol) who's been around a little bit longer. With one #1 Billboard Dance Club hit "In The DarK" (with Fancy Inc.) in 2019, Vintage Culture has been the go-to for many remix productions for other artists. 2021 saw him remix the summer sleeper "Love Tonight" by Shouse, "Talamanca" by Burns, "Let It Go" by Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers and Marc E. Bassy, "Paradise" by Meduza and Dermot Kennedy amongst many others.

Perhaps the biggest breakout of 2022 was Joel Corry who's quickly filling in the spot that Calvin Harris dominated only a few years ago. After having a #6 in the UK with "Sorry" featuring uncredited vocals by Hayley May in 2019, he followed up with the #4 "Lonely" and the #1 "Head & Heart" with MNEK in 2020, which was also his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S.

Corry has remixed countless other acts and 2022 saw him remixing top hits like "Bad Habits" by Ed Sheeran, "Tick Tock" by Clean Bandit (with Mabel and 24KGoldn), "Body" by Megan Thee Stallion, "Out Out" with Jax Jones, Charlie XCX and Saweetie, and the fantastic "Feeling Good" by the late Nina Simone, which was just featured on the 2021 Jingle Electric. He also had one of the biggest dance songs of 2021 "Bed" with David Guetta and Raye.

Party Favorz fully expects to be hearing a lot more from both these guys in 2022.

We have finally reached the end of the year and it’s time to go out with our ultimate New Year dance party mix, Blow Your Own Horn. For the past 8 years, this series has been a mainstay on Party Favorz as a way for everyone to give one final fuck you and farewell to the year that was while looking forward to a better future.

I have packed this final kiss-off to the rim with bootlegs, mashups, throwbacks and a boatload of the past year’s biggest hits reworked in a way you’d never imagine. As stated previously, the final month of every year has surprises for me that catch me off guard causing monumental headaches and 2021 didn’t let me down.

As a result, I’ve been behind the release schedule and I promise to get the remaining Top Dance Songs of the Year 2021 out by the end of the next week. Technically, 2021 isn’t finished with me yet.

Afterwards, I’ll be building a new computer for which all the parts have already arrived and start work on migrating the podcast over to Apple Music. The last part will take a while because the feed is protected and Podbean doesn’t allow protected content to by migrated even with a username and password (don’t get me started). So, I’ll be setting up everything from scratch.

Party Favorz will remain on Podbean so as not to affect our Android and Windows users and there will likely be a secondary website strictly for the Apple Music subscribers. The details will be provided at a later date.

Frankly, I could use some time off but when I try, I end up starting a new set anyway. All I ask is that you be patient with me while I work on the getting everything setup.

As you all know, 2023 will be the 15th year for Party Favorz and I’ve got a lot of loose ends, ultimate and essential collections scheduled for release next year. The goal is to wrap up the podcast nice and tidy with everything on my bucket list checked off.

This set has been reworked by smoothing out transitions, which are better suited for preserving the integrity of this time capsule that was 2021 in dance music. Track listing has remained the same and no other significant changes were made.

2021 has been a rollercoaster of a year. Despite the depressing nature of one of the year's biggest dance hits 'Marea (We've Lost Dancing)' by Fred Again and The Blessed Madonna — dance music remained a constant in our lives. The song presented us with an optimistic outlook wrapped in a solemn deep house groove but truth be told — the hits kept rolling out and so we partied like it's 2099 or at least many of us did while attending super spreader events hosted by big name DJs (one of whom is featured prominently on this year-end list). I'm holding back, can you tell...oh fuck it!

Because of my circumstances, I've been fully prepared for the pandemic and the isolation that came with it, while many were having public meltdowns over wearing a mask. Cry me a fucking river if you refuse to get vaccinated and then bitch for having to wait hours on end in the emergency room with a broken foot because they're overflowing with covid patients. Cry me a river if you were fired from your job for refusing to not only protect yourself but your co-workers and family. I have little patience for self-serving science deniers (HELLO MOM) who have been the sole reason the pandemic has stretched into a second year and possibly a third. Seriously, FUCK YOU!

Climbs down from soapbox...

Now that I got that out of my system, Party Favorz is presenting our annual Top Dance Songs of the Year for 2021 and this series covers all the bases while hitting all the right notes. These are the songs that you hummed along to, danced by yourself to, played in your car on your way to work, or whatever it was you were doing to fill time. Future House, NuDisco and Tech House continued to dominate with Big Room still lurking behind. All the BIG and midling hits are here. Don't be fooled by these phony year-end lists created in Spotify with a bunch of radio edits because these novelists cant touch this shit. Sorry for the rough tone but I guess I have a lot to let out these days.

I'm way behind the curve on getting these sets out so I'm dropping the first volume — while keeping my fingers crossed — without the full airing and flushing out of errors or swapping track versions before releasing it. I promised volume one and you're getting it (warts and all). I hate rushing mixes but a series of year-end setbacks have diverted my attention, which is par for the course every year. I WILL be back with our annual New Year blow-out dance party set, which I'm shooting for a Thursday release to ensure our good friends in Australia get it in a timely manner (yes, I do think about everyone outside of the U.S. when scheduling releases). SURPISE! Hot off the heels of yesterday's Holiday Edition 2021 — Party Favorz is dropping our year-end Holiday T-Dance set and man this is a whopper!

We've been throwing tracks into this folder since our last T-Dance release in August hoping to build up enough to complete a new set by year's end. It wasn't looking good but we went back and pulled several tracks from the scrapped Block & Crown Legacy set we had planned, added several brand new Purple Disco Machine tracks (two of which appeared on the recent Catching Up with Purple Disco Machine release) and a whole slew of great vocal house along with classics from the 70's, 80's and 90's that have been re-worked for today's modern music scene plus some current Dance Club releases. The end result is the perfect culmination of fun afternoon party tracks for any crowd on any given Sunday any time of the year. If fun is what you're looking for — then look no further.

We want to give a HUGE thank you to Joel Dickinson and Dirty Disco for fowarding Joel's upcoming release titled 'Heart of Stone' with the fabulous France Joli. Even with everything going on, we're going to go ahead and try to get the Top Dance Songs of 2021 out these final two weeks before capping the year off with our annual New Year dance party set Blow Your Own Horn. It's the most wonderful time of the year when Party Favorz rolls out our annual Holiday Edition featuring the latest circuit anthems and beefy Santa's adorn the cover.

We've pulled out all the stops to ensure our humble subscribers are getting the latest and greatest in the circuit tribal house music landscape. Our only issue is that a few DJ's who'll go unamed are getting a bit sloppy by forcing the vocals onto premade instrumentals as opposed to creating the beats to fit the structure of the song. There are a few instances here and you'll know it when you hear it. A couple of these are by veterans who should know bettter but we'll just leave it at that.

Otherwise, the set gets an A- for overall quality, song selection and flow.

It looks like there will be a new T-Dance set dropping sometime this week, which is almost done. We have some computer upgrades and reconfigurations to make over the next couple of days so it's highly likely the Top Dance Songs of the Year will not drop until early January 2022. This is not unheard of around here but it hasn't happened in a very long time and is completely out of our hands.

Jingle Electric 2021 had a minor update. The transistion between 'What You Do To Me' by Sub-X and 'Don't Be Shy' by DJ Kuba was reworked using a trick I learned from the Peak Hour releases. While the two songs are in key, the percussive elements fought against each other. Employing the trick and shortening the transition gave it a smoother flow. Otherwise, the entire set has not changed.

As Party Favorz heads toward the end of the year, we're kicking December off with our annual Jingle Electric series. It's been just over a month since we dropped HW21 and there hasn't been a whole lot of new releases but enough to compile a slamming set filling in the gaps with bootlegged classics and mashups. Several tracks that appeared on our last Peak Hour set Shiny Disco Balls in October have crossed over and exploded into the mainstream were included as well.

Since there won't be a last minute Peak Hour set, some newer notworthy songs couldn't be allowed to gather dust and were included. Same with Disco House but in that case, I moved a few over to what would've been the next T-Dance set but it's not clear that's going to be released (we'll see). There's just not a lot going on that's grabbing us at the moment and most of it is the same rote Soulful House, which has hard to swallow in large doses.

Ultimately, the  final result of this year's Jingle Electric is solid if not stellar. I've been enjoying it all week long as it's filled with re-worked guilty pleasures and future dance floor gems.
