The spiritual blessings comprise the life of the elect. The Lord defined poverty by telling the story of a rich man, whose fields had produced such abundance that he had to build bigger barns to store it all. And then one night God came for his soul and said, "You fool. Now who will own all this grain?" In other words, "You can't take bring the corn along - or the barns. You may bring only whatever you have given away." If the man had used his riches in accordance with the spiritual blessings and was therefore gracious and sacrificial, then he would have been poorer on earth but leaving earth as a far richer man. As it was, he was leaving earth a poor man.

People in the world seem to be increasingly seeking to live life without God. When God is removed from a society, all fences come down, meaning the restrictions that divine morality places upon the Divine's creatures. Marriage is redefined. Sex is redefined. Lust and passion are allowed more breadth and is labeled as freedom. Laws are redefined in terms of social justice instead of God given rights.

Spiritual over material: Obedience to God in all things is non-negotiable.

Material blessings without these spiritual blessings are not blessings at all.

God is Spirit and those who worship Him must do so in Spirit and in truth. Spiritual blessings are the only source of happiness, love, and peace. They are the only source of unity, graciousness, faithfulness, patience, gentleness, kindness, and goodness, without which, no two people can coexist in love and peace and happiness.

Man must pursue nothing else. Seek first His kingdom. All the other stuff will be added to you.

Spiritual over material: The way of God says that everyone who can work must work. And it even gives a reason, Eph 4:28:

This is in our study because the spiritual must command the material of our own bodies. We are commanded to work if we can. Certainly, because of certain handicaps, a small percentage of the population cannot work, and children up to a certain age should not work.

The Bible has a lot to say about laziness vs. energy and production from our bodies. The fruit of self-control is directed towards our bodies. Paul said, "I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest after I have instructed others, I myself should be untestable."

For faith to mature, the believer has to set about obeying God. And be ready:

The believer committed to total obedience will discover some truths about himself: He's really bad at obeying, bad at virtue, bad at self-control.

There is a silly notion that good people don't know anything about temptation. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. A man who gives into temptation in five minutes doesn't know what it is like to resist for an hour.

Bad people actually know very little about badness. Always giving in, they have lived a sheltered life. We will never know the strength of the flesh until we fight it with Christ at our side.

The bankruptcy of man is clearly revealed in the fact that without the ministry of God the Holy Spirit he could not comprehend and so believe the gospel. God the Holy Spirit was sent by the Father and the Son to convict the world throughout this age.

The Holy Spirit convicts the world (Joh 16:8-11):

One sin to the forefront.

Perfect standing with God in righteousness.

Freedom from the god of this world.

We should communicate these to the unbeliever, not to convince them in argument or to pull them into the full and detailed doctrine of imputed righteousness, but to tell them that in Christ they will be righteous and have a perfect standing with God, and the Holy Spirit will convict them of this fact.
