Rut 1:20 And she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

Title: Ruth: 1:16-21; The doctrine of bitterness.
Rut 1:20 And she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
Rut 1:21 I went out full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has witnessed against me and the Almighty has afflicted me?"
"Almighty" - Shaddai = God who gives fruitfulness and increase.
    "Mara" - bitter.
It is amazing that she would use this name for Yavah. The One who afflicted her with loss is called the God who gives increase. It is as if, in her extreme bitterness, she is calling God to account for having such a name.
Noami is bitter because she doesn't know...

  • Ruth: 1:16-21; The reproach of Christ. The doctrine of bitterness.
Title: Ruth: 1:16-21; The reproach of Christ. The doctrine of bittereness.
Love overcomes bitterness. Ruth's love for the Lord of Israel and Naomi allows her to see what Naomi cannot.
Rut 1:16 But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.
Rut 1:17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me."
Rut 1:18 When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her.
Ruth gives up her homeland, a hope of a husband and child in Moab, and seeks to take upon herself whatever future...

  • Ruth: Historical background, 1:1-21; tragedy, and death overcome by love.
Title: Ruth: Historical background, 1:1-21; tragedy, and death overcome by love.
    We continue in our introduction.
The two, Jew and Gentile (Boaz and Ruth), became one flesh.
One might imagine that it was easier for Boaz to marry a Gentile since his mother was non-Jewish. Boaz's father was Salmon who married Rahab, a Canaanite. We find Boaz to be a great man and also a very gracious and kind man, and so often such traits in a man can be a reflection of his mother. We can imagine Rahab, whose own life and the life of her family were saved by Israel and therefore by God, was a grateful mother, as was Salmon a strong and grateful father, and we can imagine that their impact on a...

  • Ruth: Introduction, part 3; the spirit of Ruth's great-grandson David.
Title: Ruth: Introduction, part 3; the spirit of Ruth's great-grandson David.
As the contents of the book of Ruth leads to the threshold of David's birth and his history, the spirit of the book also leads to David's spirit, as in the Psalms.
Just to get a flavor for the spirit of David and therefore the spirit of the book of Ruth, before we roll up our sleeves and work on our translations and interpretations, we examine a few of the psalms. We examined Psa 16, and began Psa 36, which we will complete and then finish with Psa 45.
When the believer is able to see the glory of God in all things, then he will be poetic in his own soul.
One of the key words in Ruth is checed, lovingkindness, steadfast love, and covenant love. David writes of it in Psa...

  • Ruth: Introduction.
    Title: Ruth: Introduction.
Ruth can be viewed as a third appendix to Judges.
The book of Ruth takes place during the time of the Judges.
Rut 1:1 Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land.
In ancient times some viewed it as a part of the book and the third appendix to the book. The Septuagint, written around 250 BC doesn't give Ruth a title and includes it in the book of Judges, but the Septuagint was translated centuries after the book of Ruth was written, therefore, that it is an appendix is not completely certain.
Adding the fact that the literary style is different in Ruth than in Judges, some evidence points to a different author, but this is obscure. While seeking its place as an independent book or an...

  • Judges 20. The second appendix: The Benjamite War; Final battle - compassion is better than anger.
Title: Judges 20. The second appendix: The Benjamite War; Final battle - compassion is better than anger.
Jdg 20:26 Then all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel and wept; thus they remained there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
After losing the first two battles to Benjamin, the rest of Israel had finally developed compassion and pity for the demise of their brethren. This is what God had taught them in the first defeats and now they are ready to carry out the justice of God.
Jdg 20:27 And the sons of Israel inquired of the Lord (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
Jdg 20:28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, Aaron's son, stood before it to minister in those days), saying, "Shall I...

  • Judges 20. The second appendix: The Benjamite War; Coming to know Christ fully through complete devotion.
Title: Judges 20. The second appendix: The Benjamite War; Coming to know Christ fully through complete devotion.
In the world, the battle is won and then the reward is given. In Christianity, the reward is the battle and the victory in it.
If the reward or inheritance were strictly some kind of materialism then we would have to conclude that we are working to earn a reward, but this is not the case. The reward is not something outside of the battle itself. The reward is the experience and the resultant character and strength that it brings. The character is Christ; the battle comes upon all who follow Christ simply because the world hates Him. These have all been given to us. They are not earned or worked for.
We must ask ourselves; do we desire some reward from God, but not the character and strength of...
