  • Names of God: YHVH, part 8. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:1-25; Rom 3:21-26.
Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 8. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:1-25; Rom 3:21-26.
Heb 10:19 Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 by a new and living way [hodos: road] which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh,
Heb 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
It is faith in the finished work of Christ that sprinkles us completely clean and so we have a genuine heart in full assurance of faith....

  • Judges 16. Samson part 15 “ The death of Samson and discipline of the Philistines.
Title: Judges 16. Samson part 15 - The death of Samson and discipline of the Philistines.
The saddest part of Samson's life is that he did not know that God had left him.
Jdg 16:21 Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out [bored out] his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze chains, and he was a grinder in the prison.
It would be hard to imagine the crash that Samson felt in his heart. For so long he was invincible and came to truly believe that he always would be, and now he finds himself bound by a woman and a blunt instrument boring out his eyes and then being thrown into prison behind doors he is unable to budge in the very city whose massive gate he pulled out of the ground with his bare hands.
Jdg 16:22 However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it was...

  • Judges 16. Samson part 14 “ The decline and fall of Samson.
Title: Judges 16. Samson part 14 - The decline and fall of Samson.
Jdg 16:15 Then she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when your heart is not with me? You have deceived me these three times and have not told me where your great strength is."
Jdg 16:16 And it came about when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, that his soul was annoyed to death.
Jdg 16:17 So he told her all that was in his heart and said to her, "A razor has never come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will leave me and I shall become weak and be like any other man."
These two have been lovers for a while and Delilah recognizes the difference between the way Samson told her before and how he speaks...

  • Judges 16. Samson part 13 “ The decline and fall of Samson.
Title: Judges 16. Samson part 13 - The decline and fall of Samson.
Jdg 16:4 After this it came about that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
Jdg 16:5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, "Entice him, and see where his great strength lies and how we may overpower him that we may bind him to afflict him. Then we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver."
The leaders realize that there is a secret to Samson's strength, but they have no way of understanding it. This is the position of the world. They know there is a power available and they look everywhere for it, trying to find its secret. They use terms like holy grail and fountain of youth.
Psa 2:1 Why are the nations in an uproar,
    And the...

  • Names of God: YHVH, part 7. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:19-25.
Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
    On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
    One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."
Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar
Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore,
Just as the moon rose over the bay,
Where swinging wide at her moorings lay
    The Somerset, British...

    Samson and Delilah
Jdg 16:4 After this it came about that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
Jdg 16:5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, "Entice him, and see where his great strength lies and how we may overpower him that we may bind him to afflict him. Then we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver."
The believer's strength of soul and heart lies with God alone and not in any human talent or trait that might be advantageous.
Samson was to rely upon God alone. If he did, his life and his end wouldn't have been so tragic.
    What...

  • Judges 16. Samson part 11 “ The decline and fall of Samson.
Title: Judges 16. Samson part 11 - The decline and fall of Samson.
    Samson's fall and death
This coming stage of Samson's life closely follows that of Israel. Israel claimed their prosperity and their land for themselves. They used the gifts of God for self and not for glorifying Him. They rejected the law of God and chose rather the laws of the pagan idol worshippers while they demanded the same blessings from God. Worship is due to God and not self. When worship turns to self without correction there will always be betrayal and loss.
God made Samson a Nazirite just as God made Israel a nation. Yet both will take the gift, forget God, and use it for themselves.
Jdg 16:1 Now Samson went to Gaza and saw a harlot there, and went in to her....

  • Judges 16. Samson part 10 “ The decline and fall of Samson.
Title: Judges 16. Samson part 10 - The decline and fall of Samson.
    Samson's fall and death
Samson will deliver Israel no longer. It will take Samuel to finally remove the yoke of the Philistines, thus completing their 40 years of oppression.
The closing verse of Jdg 15 is the close of any hope for Samson's life or his future. From now on is the record of the terrible consequences of using God's gift for self-indulgence, and then of betraying and losing it.
Betrayal and loss are ever the consequence of taking for self what is meant for God.
This is one of those very important points that gets deep into the way of Christ. If we ask ourselves about what in God's plan is meant for us and what is meant for God, we...

  • Judges 15. Samson part 9 “ Three major lessons from the battle of Lehi.
Title: Judges 15. Samson part 9 - Three major lessons from the battle of Lehi.
    1. The Holy Spirit can overcome any hindrance that opposes His will.
    2. Faithfulness to the calling of God. It is not a part time job.
Samson was faithful as God's servant in the battle of Lehi, but such acts in which he identifies himself as the servant of Jehovah are non-existent before and after this. His actions confirm that he does not really consider himself a servant of God. We will not see him seek God in faith again until his death, when he sorely needs God. It is also true that his faithfulness to God in the battle of Lehi appears when he is extremely thirsty. Faithfulness is not calling out to God only when we are in dire need.
1Th 5:12 But we request of you, brethren,...

Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 6. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:19-25.
Vv. 19-20: the gospel given to the Jew. Behold His face.
When a Gentile like the Philippian jailor finds his soul in the balance and is offered the gospel, the approach is "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved."
To have a richer experience from this passage, one can imagine himself as a Jew in Jerusalem in the first century. Some of his friends and family have become convinced that Jesus of Nazareth was and is the Messiah promised from their nation's birth. You are not completely antagonistic toward them, but you are not yet a believer either. You may have attended a few Christian assemblies and heard the gospel and heard the arguments that show Jesus fulfilling the prophecies of the OT, prophecies...
