  • Names of God: YHVH, part 5. The face of God to Moses and to the church; Heb 10.
Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 5. The face of God to Moses and to the church; Heb 10.
God would not turn His face upon Moses until He could do so without judging him and that required the perfect atonement of Christ.
Yavah said that He would make all His goodness pass before Moses and that He would be gracious and compassionate. His grace and compassion withheld His face from Moses until the time when Moses could behold it without judgment - after the cross of Christ.
This truth has an astounding meaning for us who live during the age of the church. It means that we can behold the face of God. We do so through our union with Christ and from that position we can fellowship with Him. We have put on Christ and we can walk with Him. We have been made perfectly righteous and we can abide in Him. We are justified and sanctified...

  • Judges 13. Samson part 1 - a type of Israel.
Title: Judges 13. Samson part 1 - a type of Israel.
Jdg 13:1 Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, so that the Lord gave them into the hands of the Philistines forty years [from the birth of Samson to the battle of Ebenezer in 1Sa 7].
Along with the curses that the captured ark spread upon the Philistines, God raised up Samson, the capstone of the judges, endowed by the Spirit with supernatural physical strength.
It would be prudent to look at some chronology of Israel at this point.
1Ki 6:1 Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the...

  • Judges 12-13. Death of Jephthah; judges Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon; introduction to Samson.
Title: Judges 12-13. Death of Jephthah; judges Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon; introduction to Samson.
Due to self-centeredness, ignorance, and paganism Israel did not have peace and unity and war ensued.
Jdg 12:1 Then the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the sons of Ammon without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you."
Jdg 12:2 And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people were at great strife with the sons of Ammon; when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand.
Jdg 12:3 And when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the sons of Ammon, and the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you...

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 12: War with Ephraim - Love is unity and not a perfect condition - Gal 6:1-5.
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 12: War with Ephraim - Love is unity and not a perfect condition - Gal 6:1-5.
Community or unity does not mean that everyone is always holy.
Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if a man is caught [caught up as in a net] in any trespass [paraptoma: false step or blunder], you who are spiritual, restore [repair] such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.
Gal 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.
Believers who have accepted falsehood will burden spiritual believers. They must bear this in love and give truth for correction in gentleness and patience.
Vv. 3-4 are for the spiritual restorers who are to be forgiving and...

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 11: War with Ephraim - Love is unity and not a perfect condition - Gal 6:1-5.
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 11: War with Ephraim - Love is unity and not a perfect condition - Gal 6:1-5.
God makes us what we are if we are following Him. God makes the local church what it is if His word is magnified.
Community or unity does not mean that everyone is always holy.
Unity is not based on inward piety or level of spiritual growth. Unity is based on love, and while it is true that God's love will not be fluid in the heart of every member at all times, it has to be so in enough of the members for the church to continue properly. When some of the members of the churches in Galatia deserted the love of God, the other members who had not were exhorted to restore them with the love of God rather than judge them or reject them.
Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if a man is caught [caught up...

  • Names of God: YHVH, part 4. The face of God to Moses and to the church.
Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 4. The face of God to Moses and to the church.
As we continue in our study of the Names of God, I want to first say a few words about the third commandment:
    [turn to]
    Exo 20:7
You shall not take [take up, lift up, or raise] the name of the Lord your God in vain [waste and disorder], for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain [waste and disorder].
The word prohibits all employment of the name of God for vain and unworthy objects: false swearing (Lev 19:12), using in an empty or thoughtless manner, lip service.
The true employment of the name of God is confined to invocation, prayer, praise, and thanksgiving, which proceeds from a pure, believing heart. The...

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 10: War with Ephraim - Love: the perfect bond of unity.
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 10: War with Ephraim - Love: the perfect bond of unity.
God makes us what we are if we are following Him. God makes the local church what it is if His word is magnified. For the sake of our study we will not consider what God makes of the saint or the church that refuses to follow His will.
Yearning for the physical presence of other believers is not sin or fleshly. Paul desired it. Jesus desired it.
We noted Paul's desire to be with the church at Rome and Thessalonica.
Luk 22:14 And when the hour had come He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.
    Luk 22:15 And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
    Luk 22:16 for...

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 9: War with Ephraim - acceptance of God's righteous way brings peace.
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 9: War with Ephraim - acceptance of God's righteous way brings peace.
    As we witnessed last time:
We do not only trust God for the circumstances of our life, but for how we turn out or mature personally. Since it is God who causes the growth, God who reveals truth in His timing, God who gives a spiritual gift, God who determined the time of your birth and so determined your parents, family, genetics, location, etc, God who prepared beforehand the works that we each were to walk in, God who out of the variety of gifts, variety of ministries, and variety of effects chose yours, God has determined you. He is molding you as the master potter. All of these things deeply effect our personalities and so it is God who is determining your personality, and not you. You likely used to dream about who you wanted to be. God had a different...

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 8: War with Ephraim. Peace and unity in the church
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 8: War with Ephraim. Peace and unity in the church.
Gilead under the leadership of Jephthah goes to war with Ephraim. The jealous and self-centered Ephraimites provoked war with hostile threats against Gilead, who are a sub-set of Manasseh. Gilead will resoundingly defeat them, but the fact that there is a war at all, Jew vs. Jew, is a testimony to the breakdown of unity amongst God's elect nation. Under God and under His law they were to be unified in love for God and therefore their neighbor. This has led us to a study on the peace and unity that is commanded of the church, the body of Christ, with specific reference to the local community of believers.
Peace exists where righteousness is in harmony with righteousness. Man cannot create his own righteousness and so he cannot make peace. God provides both righteousness and peace....

  • Judges 12. Jephthah, part 7: War with Ephraim.
Title: Judges 12. Jephthah, part 7: War with Ephraim.
War with Ephraim. Ephraim is consistently jealous and self-centered as they seek rulership in Israel.
In the book of Judges, the Ephraimites are presented as self-centered, factious, easily offended, and having an inflated estimation of their own importance within the nation.
Jdg 12:1 Then the men of Ephraim were summoned [hostile intensions], and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the sons of Ammon without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you."
Jdg 12:2 And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people were at great strife with the sons of Ammon; when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand....
