  • Names of God: YHVH, part 3. The face of God to Moses and to the church.
Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 3. The face of God to Moses and to the church.
The name Yavah or Jehovah comes from the imperfect of the verb to be. At any given time, Jehovah was being that which He was being. This implies much more than the fact that He is eternal. It also reveals that God was, is, and always will be exactly what He is. He does not change. And so, Yavah, I am that which I am, leads us to the attributes that are associated with this name.
God reveals His attributes to us and sometimes He connects them with His name YHVH. Ex. YHVH roiy = The Lord my Shepherd.
In Psa 23:1 there isn't actually a verb "is". It's not the Lord "is" my Shepherd, but "the Lord my Shepherd, I shall not want."
We finished last week with the...

  • Judges 11. Jephthah, part 6: War with Ammon. Jephthah's vow. War with Ephraim.
Title: Judges 11. Jephthah, part 6: War with Ammon. Jephthah's vow. War with Ephraim.
Jdg 11:28 But the king of the sons of Ammon disregarded the message which Jephthah sent him.
Jdg 11:29 Now the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, so that he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon.
We remember that in the OT, the Holy Spirit would come upon a person in Israel in order to empower them to do a specific task.
The Holy Spirit instructed and empowered Jephthah to take the offensive and launch a preemptive strike into enemy territory. It would have been most unexpected by Ammon.
Israel has been a weakling for 18 long years. No one would...

  • Judges 11. Jephthah, part 5: God's promotion of Jephthah despite his family's rejection.
Title: Judges 11. Jephthah, part 5: God's promotion of Jephthah despite his family's rejection.
11:1-3 give a background on Jephthah. The events are prior to the assembly of Israel at Mizpah.
    Jephthah = "he will open"
Jdg 11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior, but he was the son of a harlot. And Gilead was the father of Jephthah.
Jdg 11:2 And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, "You shall not have an inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman."
Jdg 11:3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob; and worthless fellows gathered...

  • Judges 10. Jephthah, part 4: God's promotion of Jephthah despite his family's rejection.
Title: Judges 10. Jephthah, part 4: God's promotion of Jephthah despite his family's rejection.
Jdg 10:14 Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress."
Jdg 10:15 And the sons of Israel said to the Lord, "We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to Thee; only please deliver us this day."
Jdg 10:16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served the Lord; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.
Now that they have turned to serve the Lord, the Lord's deliverance will be a life changing lesson as well as a relief from oppression.
We also have what seems to be a humanistic trait assigned to God. It almost seems like He changes His mind. It states...

  • Judges 10. Jephthah, part 3:
Title: Judges 10. Jephthah, part 3: "If your eye is singular, then your whole body will be full of light."
The Spirit and the word literally change our thinking into conformity with the will of God.
Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove [dokimazo] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
We prove to ourselves that the will of God is good, well pleasing [literal translation of euarestos], and perfect.
Good - flows from truth. It is guidance, confidence, purpose, singular of mind.
Good is a function of the truth. No longer confused about good and evil, what is truly good is no longer a mystery. This...

  • Names of God: YHVH, part 2. I am that I am
Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 2. I am that I am
We noted in part 1 that of the many names God gives Himself, YHVH (Jehovah, Yaweh, Yavah pronunciations) - used where relationships of God and man are involved, especially in man's redemption.
All divine attributes that share in redemption are given with YHVH - holiness, justice, and love for the sinner. The covenants are largely given under this name.
In Exo 34 the Lord passed in front of Moses and said Yavah Yavah El, and then He gave meaning to this title:
YHVH - compassion, grace, patient, merciful (slow to anger), abounding in steadfast love, abounding in truth, not discriminating (to thousands), forgiving, and justice.
The pagan gods are never found having names that point to compassion,...

  • Judges 10. Jephthah, part 2: Transformation to proving God's will.
Title: Judges 10. Jephthah, part 2: Transformation to proving God's will.
This beginning, Jdg 10:6-18 serves as the introduction to both the judgeships of Jephthah and Samson.
Jdg 10:7 And the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
Jdg 10:8 And they afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they afflicted all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.
Jdg 10:9 And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was greatly distressed.
Jdg 10:10 Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, "We have sinned against Thee,...

  • Judges 10. Jephthah, part 1: Confession without repentance.
Title: Judges 10. Jephthah, part 1: Confession without repentance.
This beginning, Jdg 10:6-18 serves as the introduction to both the judgeships of Jephthah and Samson.
Jdg 10:7 And the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
The oppression of the Philistines and Ammon are simultaneous. The historian will first deal with the Ammonite oppression and then the Philistine.
Jdg 10:8 And they afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they afflicted all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.

  • Judges 10. Abimelech, part 7: The judgeships of Tola, Jair, and Jephthah. The Canaanization of Israel increases.
Title: Judges 10. Abimelech, part 7: The judgeships of Tola, Jair, and Jephthah. The Canaanization of Israel increases.
    The Judgeship of Tola
Tola is one of those judges for whom there is not a lot of detail.
Jdg 10:1 Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.
Jdg 10:2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
Issachar is in the north and it is likely that Tola's influence centered around that area. We cannot determine who he saved Israel from, but as Israel returned...

  • Judges 9. Abimelech, part 6: The destruction of Shechem and Abimelech.
Title: Judges 9. Abimelech, part 6: The destruction of Shechem and Abimelech.
Where we left off, Gaal rallied the people of Shechem against king Abimelech, Gideon's bastard son, whom they elected king just three years prior. Abimelech successfully defeated Gaal and his contingent, but he did not attack the city. He would wait to do this.
Abimelech is evil and the Shechemites are evil and God sent an evil spirit among them and allowed them to destroy each other. First comes the destruction of Shechem and then Abimelech.
Punitive destruction was prophesied in Jotham's parable and confirmed by God to the historian recording the events.
Jdg 9:20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the men of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and...
