  • Judges 6. Gideon, part 5: A timid and hidden child of God is no witness.
Title: Judges 6. Gideon, part 5: A timid and hidden child of God is no witness.
    Announcements:
Jdg 6:11 Then the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press in order to save it from the Midianites.
Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, "The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior."
In a village several threshing floors would be close together in a breezy place so that the workers could socialize and assist one another since the process was laborious. No matter what, the farmers remained on the floor as long as it took to gather and store the grain in order to protect it from...

Title: Judges 6. Gideon, part 4: The threshing floor: The joy and unity of prosperous labor is only with the Lord.
    Announcements:
The message of the prophet was likely given in many places. Unlike the past cycles of apostasy during the time of the Judges, God sends a prophet this time to make it very clear to them that the reason they have been under such severe oppression is that they have not obeyed the voice of the Lord who delivered them from slavery in Egypt, safely led them through the wilderness, and delivered into their hands the whole of the Promised Land.
Young Gideon was impacted by the message through the prophet.
One of the young men who was properly impacted by the message of the prophet was Gideon living in a small village in the south-west of...

Title: Judges 6. Gideon, part 3: In chastisement the Lord's grace is near.
    Announcements:
Jdg 6:7 Now it came about when the sons of Israel cried to the Lord on account of Midian,
Jdg 6:8 that the Lord sent a prophet to the sons of Israel, and he said to them, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'It was I who brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out from the house of slavery.
Jdg 6:9 'And I delivered you from the hands of the Egyptians and from the hands of all your oppressors, and dispossessed them before you and gave you their land,
Jdg 6:10 and I said to you, "I am the Lord your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But you have not obeyed...

Title: Judges 6. Gideon, part 2: In chastisement the Lord's grace is near.
    Announcements:
Jdg 6:1 Then the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord gave them into the hands of Midian seven years.
Jdg 6:2 And the power of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves the dens [caves cut in the rock face of wadis or gorges] which were in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds.
Jdg 6:3 For it was when Israel had sown, that the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the sons of the east and go against them.
Jdg 6:4 So they would camp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza [south-west coast], and leave no...

Title: Judges 6. Gideon, part 1: In chastisement the Lord is near.
    Announcements:
Jdg 6:1 Then the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord gave them into the hands of Midian seven years.
The means of divine judgment against Israel is Midian.
The Midianites were descendants of Abraham and Keturah and were involved in the sale of Joseph to Egypt. They were defeated by Moses 2 centuries earlier (Num 31) but have recovered their strength.
We have already been twice introduced to one branch of the Midianites called the Kenites. With the Kenites Moses found shelter and married one of them. Her father, Jethro, became a believer and a close personal advisor to Moses. The Kenites journeyed with Israel into the Promised...

  • Judges 4-5. Deborah's song, part 8.
    Title: Judges 4-5. Deborah's song, part 8.
    Announcements:
The last section or stanza we find the mother of Sisera awaiting his return with dreams of the plunder in his hands. Deborah paints the picture of a lamenting widow pining at the window for her son to return.
Since her son is the commander of the armies of all the northern Canaanite kings they would have been a family of some prominence in the kingdom of Hazor. Also, being a military man, it would make sense that Sisera's father was also a soldier and likely a commander. His mother is a widow, which we may infer that her husband also died in battle, and now this Canaanite woman who opposes God and Israel, God's client nation, has lost both her husband and her son to war. Might it be that her husband died fighting Joshua in the same valley of...

Jdg 5:20 "The stars fought from heaven, From their courses they fought against Sisera.
"The stars from heaven" = The power of God in heaven which threw the enemy into confusion, including the storm that brought the rains. He is the true Victor.
Jdg 5:21 "The torrent of Kishon swept them away, The ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.
The kings of Canaan were no match for thousands of cubic feet of mud. This explains why Sisera fled on foot....
