John Owen once wrote "Be killing sin, or sin be killing you". It is true that Paul in Romans 8 said we are to put to death the deeds of the body. And it is also true that we are to take sin seriously and pursue holiness. But for those in Christ this is not a call to white-knuckled will power, this is no a call to walk in our own strength. We all want guarantees but we find they are illusive in this life. It seems nothing is guaranteed. Well in Romans chapter we find what we are so desperately searching for; a guarantee.

A guarantee, that we will not be forgotten, a guarantee that we will not be left and forsaken, a guarantee that we will not be put to shame. A guarantee that God will finish what he started in us. A guarantee that God will keep his promise to redeem us. That is what Romans 8 is about.
