Pastor Steve Miller

Jesus continues to speak and shares why what He is saying and teaching are more than the words of a good teacher, but are the very word of God. In the words He shares in this passage He focuses the listeners attention on events that will happen. He speaks of resurrection, judgement, and the destination al all people.

Three times in John 5 and two times in this specific text, Jesus makes extreme statements about His relationship and working with God that He is emphasizing is absolute truth.

In John 5 we see that Jesus confirms His authority over a man by declaring His divine relationship with God.

The focus of this story can be incorrectly placed on the man who was healed. We are thankful for a man who was healed after thirty eight years, but the focus of this story must remain on the Healer Himself. No other gospel records the story of this healing, but John through divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit has penned it into this gospel which gives further evidence to the purpose of the entire gospel of John.

Because we desire to be content, we try to control or change our circumstances with the hopes of finding contentment once the we have orchestrated the situation into how we want it to be. Contentment is not found when you learn how to change or control your circumstances your circumstances, but you can learn to be content no matter the circumstances.

All of us constantly live one moment away from fearful situations. In one moment, we could be faced with financial setbacks, in one moment we could lose someone we love, in one moment, a diagnosis could change our lives, in one moment our life could be taken away, in one moment, we could experience deep hurt, in one moment we can be overtaken by fear.

What perspectives does God want me to have in my fearful situations because of the promise that He is with us?

The greatest need Israel had is the greatest need we all have. We all need to be saved from our sins, and our only hope to satisfy that need is found in the reason why Jesus was born.

The specifics of the birth of Jesus Christ are found throughout Scripture. From Genesis to the gospels, the truth that the Messiah would come is clearly seen. When we come to Matthew’s gospel we are introduced to the human actors of Jesus’ birth. Those who would play the parts of Jesus’ parents during His time on earth. Mary was a young humble woman who fell in love with a carpenter from Nazareth, and Joseph was a hard working man who wanted to live a quiet happy life with the woman he loved. They were betrothed and waiting for the next step in their relationship, but God had a very different plan for each of them.

In this passage we discover the formation of the early church through the disciples. This group of Christ followers are commissioned by Jesus to continue the mission He began during His earthly ministry and that He fulfilled through His resurrection. The gospel is to be proclaimed to all, disciples are to be developed, and the church is given this mission directly from Jesus.

All of us have experienced something that has shook us, broke us, changed us, or depleted us of the hope, the joy, and the peace we all desire to have in our lives. A diagnosis from my doctor, the death of my spouse or family member, broken trust in a relationship, a setback in my career, the illness of my child, the day I got that phone call, a choice my adult children made, when my parents made that decision, the addiction I’ve struggled with for years.

How can I involve Jesus in my painful situation that will lead to experiencing unimaginable hope?
