The story of Noah and the flood is extremely problematic for moderns on two fronts. The first is theological. How could God destroy all of humanity but for one family? If there is a God, how could he be so mean? The second has to do with modern evolutionary theory’s hypothesis of slow change versus the rapid change of a worldwide flood. Let’s have a look at Scripture and science regarding a world wide flood. Remember, all truth is God’s truth. Where Bible and science seemingly collide, it’s a problem of interpretation on one side or the other, or perhaps on both.

Last week we saw clearly as we gazed into the starry sky that God is great, and we are very small---very, very, very small. This week we learn that while very small, God has chosen us to be very important. We are His image bearers and stewards of His earth. He loves us, and knows us be name.

On June 11 we began a series on the harmony of science and Christian faith. All truth is God’s truth so whether we are learning about creation through scientific pursuit or learning about God or His world through the study of scripture, all knowledge is His. The problem comes in accurate interpretation of both the created order (general revelation) and the Bible (special revelation).

For today, we get humbled. In order to know God, we must humble ourselves and come to Him through Jesus Christ. Usually “to be humbled” in the Christian sense is to know our sin and shame and long for a cure, but another way to be humbled is to know God’s size and our lack thereof. Today we explore the stars, and realize that the science of astronomy shows distinctly God’s size and ours. It’s humbling, but will leave us in awe at the size of our Maker.

Today we begin a new series: “The Harmony of Christian Faith and Scientific Pursuit.” Somehow there is a perception that Christian faith does not harmonize with science. In this series Pastor Joel will show how science and Christian faith are two books with the same author that give different perspectives on the creation. God is Creator and Redeemer. This is the message of the Bible. The message of science is how this marvelous creation holds together and expands and/or contracts.

Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, the day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and launched the Church of Jesus Christ.  We will travel to the south stairs of the temple with its numerous mikvahs, ceremonial baths, to visualize the place where the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to change the world through starting the church.
