Paul and Caroline Daley review TV - Handmaid's Tale | The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel | This Is US | Westworld | Stranger Things

Here's a short podcast to try and whet your appetites for Hulu's new show: The Handmaid's Tale. This show is based on a book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. She wrote it about 30 years ago and it has found a growing audience ever since. It present issues related to women's rights and over-reaching, heavy-handed governments that now feel eerie in their prescience.

This podcast is short and hopefully we capture your interest to come with us as we journey through their first season.

The Murphy's and the Garvey's places.

Sure. This looks like a normal place for a flight crew to take a break. We're on to you, HBO!

If you saw a sign like this in central Texas, you were close to a Leftovers shoot. This one was at the airport.

Taking a look at the Jarden PD storefront.

Wide angle of the Jarden PD, through the front window. You can see where Kevin's office is back there.

Faith Johnson is in the art department for the show. She must be very popular with her coworkers.

Faith Johnson works in the show's art department. I bet she is a total gun nut IRL.

There's Faith now! Apparently she's missing and possibly being investigated as a secondary departure?

Shaina Hedlund also works in the show's art department. Most of her other credits are around Austin as well.

Christina Yoo also works in the show's art department. I'm sensing a theme.

Informational posters on the little door to the PD bullpen.

San Marcos is a city very near to Lockhart were The Leftovers is filmed.

The season finale has come and gone, Colonists!

Where'd We End Up:

LA Bloc: Rendered

The Bowmans: On cruise control in a stolen Escalade (cuz why not?) outside the LA bloc. They weren't specific if they were in another bloc or if they were outside the entire colony. All five Bowmans were present and accounted for.

Alan Snyder: With the Bowmans, in the backseat of the Escalade. He has basically covered himself and his survivability 3 different ways: 1. Staff job with Helena 2. Exiting with the Bowmans and 3. Arranging to return the gauntlet to the IGA. It's not cool, but it can't be said he's not looking out for number one.

Maddie: On the way to the factory. She gambled by siding with Nolan and abandoning her family. She lost in lip-splitting fashion. See you from the moon, Maddie!

Helena: On her way to the IGA. What's it called when you get promoted after a disaster? Failing up?

Broussard: Flying solo, saying he's going to stay in the bloc. Listen to the podcast for Caroline's alternate theories on how Broussard might actually spend the near future.

Morgan: Dead. Sorry. We had to meet a quota on major-minor deaths.

Bob: Alive again! I guess the hosts CAN apply medical expertise to those they can get evil deeds out of when they want to.

Catch us next week as we move on from Colony and cover The Leftovers' final season!

Spoiler warnings: I reference Battlestar Galactica and 12 Monkeys in this episode and give away some pretty awesome plot points as ways of drawing parallels between this episode and those other shows. Look out!

Potential bird-themed resistance leaders of the LA bloc take note: the Cardinal followed Quayle into great beyond this week. Even with Total Rendition now in the near future, you were probably looking at a short tenure anyway.

As Caroline points out in the podcast, this episode featured a lot of meetings. Alcala meeting Nolan. Helena meeting Alcala. Snyder meeting Nolan. Snyder meeting Maddie. Helena meeting Snyder. Brobow meeting Karen. Whew. So many meetings! No wonder the Brobow crew had to go freaking postal at the end of the episode!

A special recognition award in the field of sliminess should be given to Nolan for the timing he allowed the Red Hats to apprehend Maddie. He gave a new meaning to "one for the road" with his celebration of kicking Hudson out of the house (what else could he have been so excited about?).

Overall, for an episode meant to get people moved into certain positions and dominoes about to fall, it was very satisfying thanks to the big action piece at the end.

Our dumb pooch from last week's podcast gets his own episode in the week's "Lost Boy". And what does he do with it? He makes his character deeper and harder to figure out mostly. He also kills a guy and lies to his parents about it. Spoiler Alert.
