In this continuation of the 2017 preview, I explore queer Disney characters, spoilery movie trailers, the pros and cons of costumes vs. mocap, lost auteur dream projects, which 2017 releases are wholesale ripoffs of Blues Brothers 2000 and an old Goosebumps book, how well The Bodyguard fared at the 1993 MTV Movie Awards, the 20th anniversary of Luc Besson's The Fifth Element, the Final Destination franchise, an imagined world of multiple Batman franchises existing simultaneously-- and we even play a quick game of "remake, sequel, or unrelated?"
As I look at a list of every movie coming out in the first half of 2017, hear me talk about the parallels between U.S. presidents and movie Batmans, a disturbing cluster of returning 2002 franchises, the filmographies of M. Night Shyamalan and Gore Verbinski, which live action Disney adaptation was better than the animated original, movies based on old crappy cop shows, the sexual dynamics of the Smurfs village, the origins of Dreamworks SKG, and an addendum to this podcast's ultimate mission statement.
In honor of the demonic spirits who walk among us on Hallowe'en, I present you with a list of the top 6 scariest things that currently happen in the picture business. Hear me monologue on topics both old and new, such as the problem with Rotten Tomatoes, the pleasures of the Saw franchise, the future of Zack Snyder's DC Murderverse, the single flaw in Disney's The Lion King, a very brief Speed 2: Cruise Control fan theory, and, well, some bad bad things.
In this very special episode, I hand out a bunch of awards to the movies of 2015, but don't hold your breath for any lame awards like sound editing, sound mixing, or best foreign language film-- the Golden Pops are distributed in awesome categories only. Along the way, hear me also drift off into tangents such as my fantasy casting of a Martin Scorsese-directed Lord of the Rings, why the return of video stores is inevitable, and the dark truth about 007.
In this conclusion to the 2016 preview, hear me explore the implications of the Purge universe, all the reasons why the new Ghostbusters should have been a sequel instead of a reboot, why Suicide Squad is primed to be a more satisfying picture than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the possible structure of Clint Eastwood's Sully, a brainstorm of lucky charm actor candidates for animation studios, and the best video game movies. Oh, and I briefly mention Troll dolls.
Kicking this pod off with a look at the upcoming movies of the first half of 2016. Hear me attempt to break down the universe of Zootopia, what's gonna happen in The Jungle Book, which X-Men movies still count, the REAL DEAL on Independence Day: Resurgence, and the most crucial thing missing from all movies today, all while getting increasingly frustrated at the growing trend of overly simple movie titles.
