🎙Key points:
Do blue blocking glasses actually work, or are they just a fad? In this episode, Dr. Gan explores whether these trendy glasses truly enhance performance or if they're just a gimmick.
Blue light from screens disrupts sleep by affecting circadian rhythms. While blue-blocking glasses claim to help, research is inconclusive. Small sample sizes in studies make it hard to determine their actual effectiveness.
Dr. Gan shares his own experience wearing blue light glasses post-brain surgery, finding relief from bright lights. However, he suggests that a pre-sleep routine—disconnecting from screens and dimming your environment—may be more beneficial for most people.
Ultimately, it might come down to personal preference, with some users feeling subjective improvements. Whether you swear by them or think it's a placebo, the choice is yours

Welcome to Peak Performance Hacks Podcast. I'm Doctor Gan, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to educate my audience about biohacking. Enjoy!
Worldwide: loneliness and social isolation. Despite living in a hyper-connected world, more people than ever feel incredibly alone, a troubling trend highlighted by the US Surgeon General. Dr. Gan discusses the profound physical and mental impacts of loneliness, including higher risks of depression, cognitive decline, and even heart ailments. He particularly emphasizes how men often rely heavily on their partners, which can lead to severe loneliness if those relationships end.
Throughout the episode, Dr. Gan elaborates on the various contributing factors to loneliness, such as social media, cultural beliefs, and personal obligations. Using data from Australian studies and other sources, he highlights the importance of maintaining relationships at every stage of life. Dr. Gan also offers practical solutions for overcoming loneliness, suggesting ways to reconnect with old friends, join interest-based groups, or even start new communities. His compelling advice encourages taking proactive steps towards building meaningful relationships and supporting others who may also be struggling with isolation.
Key points:
Loneliness as an Epidemic: The US Surgeon General highlights loneliness and isolation as critical health issues, comparable to hunger and thirst in terms of basic human needs.
Physical and Mental Health Effects: Loneliness can lead to severe health problems like depression, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's.
Impact on Men vs. Women: Men often rely heavily on their partners for companionship, making them more vulnerable to loneliness after relationship disruptions. Women are generally better at maintaining social ties.
Role of Social Media: While social media connects us, it can also exacerbate loneliness by replacing deeper, in-person interactions with superficial online engagements.
Practical Solutions: Reaching out to old friends, engaging in interest-based groups, and possibly seeing a counselor can help mitigate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

In this episode, Doctor Gan explores the resurgence of medicinal mushrooms in modern health and wellness. He provides an intriguing overview of different types of mushrooms, their historical uses, and the current scientific landscape surrounding their benefits.
Through a detailed examination, Dr. Gan elucidates the potential advantages and the need for more robust studies to substantiate the claimed health benefits of these fungi.
Medicinal mushrooms have a storied history, from being revered in ancient China and Egypt to their current popularity among wellness enthusiasts. Dr. Gan discusses varieties like reishi, known for its immunity-boosting properties; lion's mane, acclaimed for cognitive enhancement; cordyceps, linked to increased stamina; and chaga, touted for its broad-spectrum health effects.
Highlighting the subjective nature of supplement efficacy, Dr. Gan emphasizes the role of personal belief and placebo effects in the perceived benefits of these mushrooms. While reinforcing the importance of foundational health practices, he recognizes mushrooms as a potential edge for those already optimizing their lifestyle.

Historical Use: In ancient Egypt and China, mushrooms were revered for spiritual and longevity benefits, while the Aztecs used them in religious rituals.

Cordyceps in Sports: Cordyceps gained attention during the 1993 Olympics when Chinese athletes used them to enhance performance instead of steroids.
