Good morning, welcome to another Wesley Wednesday with Pastor Dave! I’m proud to be a United Methodist.

In today’s devotion I will provide a quick summary of several of the doctrinal standards within the Confession of Faith, from the Evangelical United Brethren Church. It’s the week of Thanksgiving. And this week, my wife, Tricia, and I are visiting our daughter Katie in LA - yep Los Angeles! We’re here for a few days and then will be back for church on Sunday. This is our first time visiting LA, so lots to see.

I’m so very thankful for my family, my church and all of my friends. I am blessed way more than I deserve, and I am vey grateful.

Since it’s a time of Thanksgiving, I sat down at the piano and decided to play some songs of Thanksgiving.

In our time together now we’re going to do three things. Hold up three fingers. We’re going to sing our song with our mouths. We’re going to listen to a story from the Bible with our ears, and we’re going to pray the action prayer with using our words and our actions to pray and talk to God..

Grace and peace to you, welcome to Sunday morning worship for November 20, 2022. I’m Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor at Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is the Sunday before our National Day of Thanksgiving and so our scripture passage this morning is Psalm 126 a Psalm of Thanksgiving and our first prayer together this morning is a prayer of Thanksgiving.

Good Thursday Morning, or whatever time it may be where you are. A week from today will be Thanksgiving Day. It seems like just yesterday we were enjoying Labor Day weekend, and the day before that we were at the beach in the early summer. So where did this year go? I think a lot of us ask that question every year along about this time.

So, this year Thanksgiving will be very different for my wife, Tricia, and I. Since our children have grown and gone, we seldom have had them here for Thanksgiving.

The 2016 Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church includes an important section on the doctrines of our denomination. Within this section we find the “Twenty-nine Articles of Religion” dating back to the beginning of the Methodist Church and The Confession of Faith of the Evangelical United Brethren Church . When the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined with the Methodist in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church the doctrinal statement of both denominations were included in the Book of Discipline.

When it comes to church life and the things we do at Peakland, what are we most passionate about?

When it comes to our church, what are our hopes and dreams for Peakland?

What are the greatest needs in our community that Peakland might meet?

Over the past six, weeks, we at Peakland have been asking and discussing those questions. We’ve met with community leaders and church leaders, and church member in person and online. Folks have sent me emails and chatted with me one on one.

We’ve had a wealth of responses.

Now it’s time to put it all together.

We’ll do that together as a church community on Peakland Vision Day, which is Saturday, November 19 here at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Jason Stanley, a former staff member here at Peakland, will lead our time together on Vision Day, which is Saturday, November 19 here at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m.
