  • How to use the LM menu and launch panel

#How to use the LM menu and launch panel

    Script

The Linux Mint menu is very much like the menu on a windows computer. It allows you to find and run all the applications installed on your computer.

You can open the menu one of two ways: you can click on it with your mouse pointer, or you can press the windows logo button on your keyboard (if you have one).

The menu has four basic areas:

    1. The pinned app icons are in a column on the left-hand side. These allow quick access to things you use frequently.
    2. The middle column is a list of app categories, organised by task type. There is a special "all applications" item at the top that contains everything.
    3. The right-hand column is the list of applications, and the contents change if you click on one of the category items in the middle column.
    4. Across the top is the search field, which allows you to find apps by typing a few letters of their name. This can be faster if you can't remember where the app is in the application categories, or it's a long way down the "all applications" list.
    5. The pinned app icons column normally contain the following icons, starting from the top:

      1. Firefox web browser for accessing web sites.
      2. The software manager for adding and removing applications to your computer.
      3. System settings for tweaking everything about how Linux Mint works. This includes things like colour scheme, languages, system behaviour, and so on.
      4. The command terminal. This is seldom used by ordinary users but can be useful for doing certain tasks.
      5. The File manager, which allows you to see and manage your files - documents, photos etc.
      6. The screen lock. Clicking on this immediately locks your screen and will usually require you to enter your password again to get back in.
      7. The Log Out button. This will allow you to log out without shutting your computer down. You might use this if you share the computer with others.
      8. The red Shut Down button, which lets you turn your computer off, or put it to sleep.
      9. You can add icons to the pinned apps column by locating them in the main menu, and right-clicking on the program's name, then selecting "add to favourites", but remember that there is limited room for icons here, and it may cause you to have to scroll up and down to find things, which will obviously make it slower to use. You can of course remove items from this area to make room, similarly to how you add them. Find the applicaiton in the menu, then right-click on it, and select "remove from favourites". You can do this for the top five items, but not lock screen, log out or shut down.

The Categories column makes it easier to navigate through the long list of applications that are installed on your computer "out of the box". Choose the category that reflects the kind of thing you want to do, and click on it, then the list in the right hand column is changed to reflect the applications in just that category. As mentioned earlier, the "all applications" category contains everything. As you can see, it's quite a long list.

You can use the mouse wheel to scroll the items in the applications list, or if your mouse does't have a wheel, if you put the mouse right at the bottom of the list, it will scroll down automatically. To scroll back up, you can put the mouse pointer right at the top of the list, but it's a bit tricky to get exactly right.

The search field across the top is very useful when you can remember the name of the program you want. Click the mouse pointer into the field, and start typing. Any programs which contain what you have typed will be displayed in the applications column, with the best match highlighted. Once you have typed enough letters to show the program you want, you can press enter or return to run it right away, or click it with the mouse.

The windows logo key is very useful if you don't have a mouse, or find using the mouse inconvenient or difficult.

This feature works very well with the windows logo key on your keyboard. When you press it, you can just start typing the name of the program you want, and press enter when you have found it.

Yuo can also navigate around the categories and application list by using the arrow keys on your keyboard. When you first press the down-arrow key, the highlight will be in the categories column, and it will jump to the second category from the top, usually Accessories, and the applications list will be adjusted to show the contents of that category. Pressing down arrow again will move to the next category down, and so on. If you shoot off the bottom of the list, you will be sent back to the top. Once you are in the category you want, you can press the right-arrow key to shift over to the applications list column, and then scroll down the list until the item you want is highlighted. Then press the enter key, and the program will be launched.

The "panel" is like the windows task bar. It's the bar that the LM menu sits on, and it usually contains a few icons already on the left, which you can click on to instantly launch the corresponding program. It also contains, the system status indicators, and time on the right.

Usually you will find the file manager, Fire Fox, and command terminal on there, and it will also show icons for running programs here too. You can add your own icons similarly to how you can add to the pinned apps column of the LM menu, or even remove ones you don't want. Just navigate to the program you want to add in the LM menu, right click it, and select "add to panel". To remove icons, just right click on one, and select "unpin from panel".

      10. Hero Of City (2001)

This is a remake of Reservoir Dogs, which was itself a remake of City on Fire.

I'm uploading it here because my friend had a much lower quality copy on youtube that got a copyright strike from the people who own City on Fire. They don't own this! And they don't own Reservoir Dogs! And the people who do own this don't seem to mind it being distributed, so here it is.

It's fine. I've seen it several times. City on Fire is a better movie, but ... well, the people who are currently distributing that are filing fraudulent copyright claims, so ... here we go again.

This isn't the only way to do it.

It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.
