  • STANDARD DEFINITION with SURVIVORS OF THE KRAKEN (Episode 1, July 2024)

Survivors of the Kraken is a new group with a long history. Twenty years after a dramatic on-stage breakup, these lifelong friends released their debut album, "Amid Life Crises." Join Survivors of the Kraken as they perform songs from their debut record and, with Brad Rohrer (from the Funbearable Podcast!), discuss their musical journey in subModern's "Standard Definition."

    Survivors of the Kraken: https://www.survivorsofthekraken.com/

    Funbearable: / @funbearablepod

"Standard Definition" is music and interview show filmed entirely on analog video equipment (but not necessarily edited analog) and presented in glorious 4:3 aspect ratio. The interviews and live musical performances are filmed at subModern audio, an analog recording studio in Providence, Rhode Island.

  • #36 Connecting to GMC-300 Geiger Counter using a serial port (not through USB).

There are already instructions how to connect to GMC300-type geiger counter using USB, but I couldn't find any instructions on using the actual serial port that's directly on the board. In this video I'll show you how to do that.

This should work on GQ GMC-300, GMC-320, GMC-300E and other variations.

  • #35 Adding USB-C port to a Label Printer (Brother P-Touch D210)

This label printer can run on 6 AAA batteries (a ridiculous amount), or a 9VDC barrel jack. So I "upgraded" it with a usb-c port by simply wiring up a usb pd trigger board.

  • #34 UNbasics: How to solder SMD

A (very) quick tutorial on soldering SMD components. I know there are plenty on YT already, but I like content that's short and to the point with minimal detours.

If you want to know which soldering iron and flux I am using, refer to video #29: https://youtu.be/ZSd81kabz6k

  • #30 Thermal Master P2 Pro review and comparison with FLIR One Pro

As you can expect, there is no “best thermal camera” out there, so here I compare functionality and features of these two, so you can decide which is best for you.

TL;DW: both cameras offer similar features, FLIR mobile app is easier to use (mostly), but TM has superior hardware. TM P2 Pro also has a lower price, so it provides a better value overall.

Both cameras are usable for home inspections, PCB inspections, some limited wildlife tracking, but don't expect very accurate temperature measurements from either one.

Some notes that did not make into video:

    • TM app allows tracking high/low temperatures in a specific region of the screen
    • TM uses the phone's battery while FLIR has its own built-in battery
    • TM has AI resolution enhancement which is basically fancy interpolation
    • FLIR allows adjusting how far the connector comes out of the camera
    • Both cameras work with USB-C iPhones using the adapter
    • Neither camera works with USBC-to-Lightning adapter while using the lightning extension cord
    • Neither camera works while connected to a Mac.

    • #29 Bambu Lab fiasco affects you! Even if you don't own their printer. #bambulab

This is my take on the Bambulab's new Authorization firmware/system they're trying to push on to their users.

One of the first videos that brought wide-spread attention to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIyaDD8onIE

Consumer Action Taskforce explaining the issue in details: https://wiki.rossmanngroup.com/wiki/Bambu_Lab_Authorization_Control_System

      More videos about this:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vNEEhfZdN8
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFotkmlPAT4

In case it wasn't clear, DO NOT BUY THEIR PRINTERS until and unless the company walks back this decision and publicly takes accountability for this screwup.

If you're curious, in this video I "upgraded" one of those cheap plasma lighters with a larger battery and replaced micro usb port with a USB-C.

    • #27 Cub Cadet snowblower steering cable replacement.

This is for 31AM53KR596 and 31CM53TR596 Cub Cadet 24-inch 2-stage gas snowblowers. It might be similar on other models, but the parts might be different.

You will need to order a part that has one of these numbers:

      746-0956
      746-0956A
      746-0956B
      746-0956C
      946-0956B

I've searched for "clutch cable" replacement and "brake cable" but couldn't find anything, because I didn't bother reading the manual 😃

    • #26 Hantek Bench Power Supply review and remote control with Raspberry Pi (HDP1160V4S)

This is a quick review of the Hantek adjustable power supply features and serial connectivity.

      Model: HDP1160V4S

      PROS:

      • stable output
      • RS232 - remote control
      • easy to use
      • OCP/OVP
      • "preview" before turning on output
      • CONS:

        • awkward form-factor (it's tall, easy to tip over)
        • the noise is always at 50mv even when output is 1V, making it ~5%
        • per-digit adjustment
