I always see lots of grasshoppers here over the summer and some plants here and there get munched, but there is enough vegetation that the impact is not usually notable. This year there were a lot of them in my main Comfrey (Symphytum) patch- man they were really chomping the heck out of those plants! It still wasn't a big deal, since those plants are huge and vigorous and I have to chop them back majorly anyway (several times, or here and there continuously). Sometimes the grasshoppers are pretty placid and don't move much when I come near- this one on Aug 06 was too busy chowing down to worry about me- I even had the tripod set up and got quite close.

The dramatic frosty Narnia conditions of the first week of January gave way to mild weather, then even milder! The trees shed their white, snow began to melt (some kinds of spots are always quick to become bare, while others will not see bare ground till spring), puddles appeared! Rocky Mountain House reached 16C/61F, Red Deer nearer 10C/50F- we in the middle were closer to Rocky's high, but I think not quite.. Windy day- that warm Pacific air has to get blown in somehow! but not nearly as windy as the day to come (which was not nearly so warm...)

Interesting winter it's been: mild not snowy November; somewhat snowy colder than average December (cold days but no super low nights). We had light snow, frost and even freezing drizzle in the first days of January, that turned everything white (see those vids), since then has been above to well above average, with no snow. Dry, warm spells are not unusual in winter for us, though more likely before Christmas than in January, so it's been a bit backwards. Nothing super cold in the advanced forecast before the end of the month- this super warm weather tapers off, with some cold but not seriously cold days then back to a little above average again.. I wonder what February and March have in store? Historically they could go either way....
