Over the last couple of weeks, my old chain saw started to have troubles and ended up unusable. I had to wait for the shop to be open after the holidays, and then for the repair person to be in. At first it seemed replacement of a small part and tune-up might do it, but alas no such luck! It needed a raft of parts and service- not so surprising after years of hard use (some service and parts in the past, but not recently). It would have been C$480 to bring it up to snuff or C$580 for a new one (before tax). Not in the budget! They mentioned a couple of smaller saws $399 and $269. In the end I went with the C$269 ($283 w tax, plus $31 to pay for the preliminary work done on the old one, which I brought home in case finances suggest a full repair in future, or I can pass it along to someone else who wants to fix it up.. sadly I'd just bought a new $38 chain for it.. doesn't fit the new one, lol). This is still a good brand - Stihl- no economy in getting a really cheap one for hard regular use! It is clearly less powerful than the old one, which would be most relevant trying to drop large trees, which I don't do much -large is relative- but I do cut some largish fallen ones, where I may have to work around the length of the bar..

After a couple of weeks of mostly below -10C to -15C daytime, and numerous light snowfalls and several recent days of freezing drizzle followed by freezing fog- we have the best trees of the year! Covered in snow, tiny bits of ice and mounds of rime frost 😃 This beauty is fragile and will disappear soon as it warms up in the next few days to near then above freezing, if we get some wind it will go even faster..

We quickly drafted the recommendation and ran around the room to seek consensus. We actually checked wording with the PCC too! The monitoring officer was on hand to make sure it ticked the legal boxes. Then is went to the vote. Only two voted against it.

If you vote not to accept the budget as is and vote only to approve it with conditions, you find yourself in a position where it suddenly dawns on you that have to work out what to say as the recommendation! I'm not good at thinking on the hoof like this... 😦
