The unbeliever is not free. He is a captive to sin and to the Christ-rejecting world system in which all live, a system which the Bible calls Babylon. All need to flee out of Babylon and come to Jesus Christ in repentance and faith.

God is not mocked. He can make people think they are being so very wise in their rejection of Him, when of course they are doing no such thing. This blinding of people's minds is part of God's sovereignty over all men.

Concerning nations which reject Him, God's providence, or sovereign power, overrules in the affairs of nations, and He can cause those nations which think that they are wiser than He is to become so immersed in their man-made philosophies, that this is in itself His judgement upon them, for those philosophies have within themselves the seeds of the nation's destruction.

Those who reject the Christian gospel are always risking being given completely over to an embracing of the foolish ideas of men, so that they become utterly blinded by the foolishness. This is an aspect of God’s judgement upon them.

How today in our nation we need to cast off the fashionable wisdom of this world, which is seeking to destroy Christianity, the Bible’s authority and indeed our whole Christian civilisation. Let us remember that “the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Corinthians 3:19).

Three vital truths are set forth by the death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Truth 1) The document written by God’s hand condemning men for their sin has been cancelled and nailed to the Cross. The sinner’s condemnation is blotted out, because Christ has paid his penalty in his place.

Truth 2) Satan’s stranglehold over Satan and fallen man has been broken. No non-believer need remain under Satan's sway.

Truth 3) Religious ceremonies and man-devised good works contribute nothing to our salvation. No one can earn a place in heaven through his oen goodness.

“God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14).

This passage teaches us much about the non-believer’s wretched spiritual inadequacy. We observe here his failure to realise his spiritual need, his failure to listen to God's voice, his misplaced confidence in his own virtue, his unjustified constant demands for further evidence, before he will believe, his spiritual dullness and slowness to apprehend spiritual truth. The only way that the non-Christian can be rescued from this dangerous spiritual inadequacy is for him to acknowledge his spiritual hunger and thirst to come in repentance and faith to Him who is the bread of life, the Lord Jesus Christ, He who alone feed him so that he will live for evermore.

These verses encapsulate the message which must be proclaimed to all non-believers today : Do not focus solely upon your bodily needs and earthly existence, upon “the meat which perisheth”, but rather come to Him who is the bread of life, who has the spiritual food that men might live, who has “the meat which endureth unto everlasting life”.

Solomon fell terribly away from the Lord in mid-life. He had reached amazing levels of maturity as a believer, and yet he still fell. He made a shipwreck of his faith, but by God’s grace he came to his senses and was gloriously restored, to be again greatly used of God in his later years. The book of Ecclesiastes is the evidence of that. But let us take heed of the danger of wrecking one’s faith through spiritual carelessness and through succumbing to worldly pressures. May we ask ourselves the question, Am I remaining wholeheartedly faithful, right now, upon this very day? May the Lord give each of us the grace to persevere to the very end.

There is a clear connection between a people’s obedience to God and the prosperity of their agriculture. A nation which honours God will experience abundant blessing upon its fields. This of course also applies to a nation’s general economic situation. In Jeremiah’s day the removal of the ability to enjoy the fruits of the land was the judgement of God upon a rebellious nation. As this precise moment in time, God is still mercifully blessing our country with plenty of food on our tables, but how we should pray that the nation might come to repentance, returning in all humility to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we today want to live in a land flowing with milk and honey, as opposed to a land coming more and more under God’s judgement, then there must be a great fleeing to Christ in repentance and faith - a seeking of God’s mercy, whilst there is still time.
